How do you feel about wide angle portraits? This shot was taken with the kit lens, but I have been seriously contemplating the 17-40.

Very interesting. The mother's left hand is gigantic though, it kinda ruins the image...

However, that's my own opinion.

As far as wide angle portraits go, I absolutely love benvision's work (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/search.php?searchid=184024) with the russian fishy (MC Zenitar 16mm f/2.8).

Superb shot! I like the 'large' hand distortion. Works in this pic to show how tiny the baby is......the B&W works well and the sharpness is great!! Good job!

I agree....I like it. The large hand proportions the baby and also draws attention to the ring/marriage/love, etc... I love wide angle stuff. Its really fun, but not always easy to do right. I find that the more aggressive I am with my 17mm Tokina, the better my WA portraits turn out.

Yes the hand is oversized but I like the shot alot. I think the viewer will know that the oversized hand was intentional and part of the character of the shot.

Nice!

I like it - even with the gigantic hand, as said before it makes the baby look even smaller. A good effect, atleast in my opion.

Gret shot and nice in B&W. Nothing wrong with the kit lens either, very good. The hand does not bother me, it is a nice composition. I think.

I like the shot a lot. I wish the pillow were gone from the background. Oh, and I think all moms are angels, but it is really cool you caught part of her wings in the photo ;)

Thank you all for the compliments. The large hand was what I was going for. I had the scene set up with her legs over the baby and I was going to make the baby more of the focal point but he kept looking away, plus I was shooting at f/6.3 so it was tough to get a nice shot of his face with available light.

I like how this one turned out although I did notice her shoulder. I have no idea why it looks that way.

Exif:
shutter: 1/25
aperture: f/6.3
ISO: 800
focal length: 18mm

I plan on playing more with the kit lens tomorrow. I just haven't given it a chance but I figured I should mess with it before I spend moeny on a replacement for it. I may end up not wanting to go that route right away and opt for a longer lens. I'll post any decent shots I get.

Gosh, the hand doesn't bother me at all but what does is the fact that the mother and the baby are not connecting. The shot should show them looking at each other I would think, connecting in some way. Exposure, compositon, focus are all excellent, it's the pose that I find strange.

yeah, I was trying to get her smiling and him smiling at the same time. But, handheld with the shutter speed I had I just took what I could get. Good point though Titus.

[edit] he was watching TV  I cloned the remote out of the left hand corner of the picture!

The shot should show them looking at each other

I think you captured a PERFECT mom/child moment. As a mother to an eleven year, lord knows THESE ARE THE PERFECT MOMENTS ;) (ie...from what i see pictured here, mom is tired, but her main concern is the happiness and safety of her child-clean diaper, bottle whatever it takes) the baby seems very safe with mom's massive hand there to protect him/her, so he feels safe and confident enough to look away from her. know what i mean?

This is a perfect moment for these two. :D

maybe i would crop a little off the top to balance out the cropped hand.

i love the bw!

I think this picture is excellent! It would have been perfect if you didnt cut off the hand at the bottom, but tremendous anyway!
I still say the 18-55mm is an awesome wide angle lens.
