I don't take a lot of landscape photos but I've been trying to widen my repertoire recently and I was inspired by the bright colourful fields at the moment.

What do you think?

Kevin.

What do I think? I think, why haven't you been posting more with great shots like this?!?! :)

I really like it, and my only complaint is that it is overcompressed, so there are a lot of JPEG artifacts which are a little distracting, especially in the sky. The file is only 64K. You can use less compression, we don't mind. I'd like to see it without those artifacts, maybe about a 10 compression level if your using Photoshop.

Oh, and welcome to the forums.

:D Wow! Thanks for the kind comments! Perhaps I'll take some more and see if it was a lucky fluke!

I think the compression is done by the hosting site (fotopic.net) 'cos the file I uploaded was over 200K on my PC. I shrunk it to 800x600 at only 5% compression.

Thats an awesome shot man - Looks like something out of a magazine or out of Microsoft's preset backgrounds.

Anyone with a camera who passed on this shot should be, well, shot? (Maybe at least with a Polaroid). That is wonderful and very well captured.

Wonderful shot and colors! I have a question for the pros and experienced photographers. Would the shot be improved if the house was a little more to the left instead of in the center (via cropping or recomposing)? I know the house is not the main subject so it could very well be fine the way it is. Would like to see your thoughts on this idea. I need all the composition help I can get!
Again, beautiful photo Kevin!

:o Aaww you guys, I'm blushing!

I really appreciate the kind comments. It's given me such an ego boost, I'm going to go out and take some more pictures!

Oh wait, it's raining... maybe tomorrow!!

This the original image? Those colors don't look real. Did you do a lot of editing and cranking up of the colors?

Really nice shot. I have the same question - is the color enhanced?

Great picture! Did you use a polarizer?

Elvis has just left the building http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif

that is a gorgeous scene Kevin

Dennis (guitarman) , I think it's ok as there is a slant on either side where the house is situated (in the picture anyway)
it's not standing high up on the slope dominating the scene
the rape (I presume it's rape) takes over the scene mostly , with the blue sky and fluffy clouds
the house seems to finish off the whole picture beautifully
perfect red roof also and everything going for it

Really nice shot!
Is that a canola field?
If so, the colors of a blooming
canola feild can be unreal.

The crop is Oil Seed Rape (Marie had it right!) which is common around Hampshire. There are plenty of yellow fields at the moment. What's not so common is finding an 11th Century church in the middle of the field! It's Idsworth Church, near Havant.

Being the south of England, the other thing that's not too common is great weather! I was lucky enough to get a good sunny day (although it was the second time I'd tried to get a decent shot).

However, the sky was a little paler than I'd have liked. I didn't have a polariser so I tried a few things in Photoshop. My first effort was a graduated filter effect but that made the clouds look gray.

So I created a mask round the sky and increased the contrast and saturation slightly. This made sure that the field was unmodified but brought out the sky and clouds a bit.

I prefer not to post process my pictures too much but I was really impressed with the result.

Glad you all like it!

Kevin.

It's a beautiful shot except for one thing - that oil seed rape is horrific for hay fever sufferers such as myself!

Love it - would much prefer to see the house to the far right or left - create some leading lines. GREAT colours.

I see the slight distortion around the church now
sorry about that
(seeing it )
( doing the mask work on the sky affected the edges of the building )

and I also see it is a church

many thanks for explaining

I can see the headlines
' beautiful rape near the church'

I'll have to agree with Rubberchickenguy: Using the rule of thirds and the lines of the land would of added some dramatics to good pic and make it a great pic. I think if the house was more dominant centering it like this would of worked better. Great color and post processing!

Hmm, it's true that I was forgetting my Rule of Thirds, however I liked the symmetry and the curvature of the hill. And you have to break the rules sometimes!

I also had some that were more close-up but they seemed to lack some of the drama of this shot.

I'll try to remember the rules on my next attempt ;)

LOL Amend to that!

Yes, you right, rules are made to be broken.
