"I just got my xxxx lens today!"
"Woo Hoo! My 1-1000 f/0.0001 lens just arrived!"
It's keeping me up at night.....
I kee telling myself, "Must search marketplace, eBay, B&H, KEH.... Find good deal." over & over & over....
I emailed my B&H wishlist to my wife, and she said "SURE, you can get the 100mm mackeral USA whatever thingy(100mm f/2.8 Macro), and the 70-200 4L minimeter lens(70-200mm f/4L).... Right after you finish remodeling our bathroom... put a new roof on the house, build a garage... and have it all paid off."
ugh...
For the sake of my marriage, I may have to stay clear of this place until then.

Ditto, ditto, ditto..... I just bought my wife a new bicycle today. Hopefully it'll soften the blow to my head when I order up a new lens. The roof is on hold until later this summer! :)

Someone said the other day "Buy EVERYTHING before you get married". I am taking that advice to heart. Getting everything now while she's my girlfriend and not my wife :D
But I'm still not telling her how much the stuff costs, lol.

This sounds oh so familiar, but I must say my wife was FANTASTIC enough to let me get the XT Kit when we originally agreed to only spend $600 to take pictures of the kids! But now I want a secondary zoom/telephoto lens...I don't have any more money to buy her anything to soften the blow to my head!
who me?

But that sucks for those of us that have been married for a long time. If I could only turn back the marriage clock so that I could get all my photo stuff without needing permission.. or an act of congress for funds....

I"ve been lucky;sold refurbished printers on Ebay for 6 months......not bragging;but made $40,000.00 doing this. Able to pay for 2 daughters in college and buy my equipment.
Do not sell any more;took too muck time from my Saleman's job and EVERYONE needed or wanted HELP because these printers did not come with manuals. The manuals were available online;but I guess no one took the time to download.
I must say;it could be a GOOD living if someone has the time and the contacts.

The benefits of being single......money don't care who spends it......and if I don't, no one else does....lol
BTW...sounds like your wifes been pretty open to your purchases so far......most guys I know wouldn't be able to get away with all that unless they made $100,000 a year!!!

Ok, I got her to cave a bit...
I can choose one of the following: (along w/saving for the 70-200 f/4L)
1) Used Canon 100mm 2.8 macro (non USM)
2) Used Sigma 105mm 2.8 Macro (non HSM, and $70 less)
3) Do nothing until next Canon "Triple Rebate" promotion. (If that ever happens again)
Thoughts?

The old canon EF100 macro is an unbelievably sharp lens!Buy it without worry if that's what you want.
The sigma is not so good.yes it's sharp but beside the canon it shows it's ordinaryness.
Then again the rebate sceme sounds like the best long term strategy (most for the least worry/arguing)
Like thedigitalguy above i make money trading secondhand photo gear on ebay (buy any loacl bargains, sell on epay) allthough nothing remotely like the amount he made!
Basically it was a great way to 'own' cameras and lenses for awhile while trying lots of different lenses -all the time slowely building up 'keeper' items for myself.
It helps that i LIKE secondhand gear :) (yes i'm naturally tight)

Getting the right girl is much like buying the right lens. I've been with mine 13 years and she was stood with me when i bought my 16-35 my 85 1.8 my 50 1.4, all on the same day. Over here that's about $3000 US
I took my 16-35 back and her reply to that was.."what are you going to get instead?"
Don't get me wrong though, she knows well that treat for me means the same for her. I took her to Mcdonalds just after that photo was taken:eek:

But at least it won't hurt as much as if he had bougth her a SUV ;-)
My question is: how does one convince the "If she's not happy, no-one's happy" that a 500 f/4 and 1D Mk II are a great idea for Father's Day?
She's must know by now that photography is a bottomless pit:)

I recently bought a 20D, Sandisk CF cards, stoboframe, Speedlights all in one shot... all said, about $2600 at one clip. Wife was accepting to the fact that I hadn't bought anything "for me" in a long time. One thing urks me though.... the other day she said she wanted to take up "Skeet Shooting" and want a nice 12-gauge shotgun this weekend. Is there something I should be concerned about?
As stated in a previous post, she is a great cook and a good mother..... so, my offer still stands.... will trade wife for some good L-glass. Low mileage and no baggage attached. :-)

Nothing. Just buy TWO shotguns and start enjoying skeet yourself. Very relaxing, very interesting activity. OTOH, just in case, at least you are both armed :D

Just put in the new furnace, new roof and waiting on the new garage and will be paying them off over time but still managed to get the EF 100 f/2.8 USM macro and the EF 100-400 f4.5-5.6L IS USM as part of the deal. If I'm going to suffer, I can do it while smiling!

My wife always asks: "DO YOU REALLY NEED THAT?" I respond, yes I do. She may not not like all my big purchases, but she always enjoys using the items. She does not play with my DSLR, but she uses my Oly C-750. She really enjoys the pics I take of the kids and other things. She knows I want an L lens and so far she is against spending all those dollars on a lens. Sooner or later she come around.

When you're married 43 years like me, you won't have to ask any more, but you will anyway. It's just a small way of showing respect for the person who's given her entire life to you.
Don't be jealous. Be thankful you have someone that takes an interest in what you do.

Man, you guys must be married to the wrong women. http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif I've bought 2 dSLRs, 3 Canon L lenses, Alien Bees, a new notebook computer for tethered shooting and a bunch of other accessories. We've been married for just shy of 15 years.
While we don't ask "permission" or make huge discussions to get things, we do say "I need X" and then go out and get it. I've never had to beg to buy anything and while, on the odd occasion, she'll come out with "you're nuts" when she hears I paid $2000 for an L lens, she doesn't complain about it or anything.
She also gets her toys. She's always getting new clothes (I mean, I must dress my model, right?? http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif) she recently got a new upright dryer with a top drying compartment and other things.
I have to wonder, why do all these other married couples create so much strife for themselves? Don't you get enough of that from the world outside of your marriage?
..just curious.
By the way, here's my beautiful wife/model http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

Rob612: GOOD POINT! In fact, I am a firm believer that you should have a backup everything.... camera, car, beer cooler and now, shotguns! :-) Of course I was only joking about the wife.... she would never use a shotgun on me for purchasing L-glass.... that's what her .38 is for! :-) Really, she's a good sport... she has to be... I am always shooting at her (with a Canon of course)

You have to remember that a happy meal costs twice as much in the uk as it does in the states... She wanted upgrade the coke for a milkshake, but hey you do stuff like that and they start getting used to it:eek:
If she reads this i'm a dead man:rolleyes:

Thanks, David. You'd think that someone as old as I am should have learned something.
All my life, there's been someone older telling me, "Someday, you'll understand." I guess I've lived long enough, because I'm starting to understand. ;)

Hey Gary, she has that 'go ahead and buy it' expression. Trouble is, you don't know whether she is serious or it is a thinly vailed threat.
Be afraid, be very afraid!

I am trying to convince the wife not to buy/upgrade to a new house, saving $1750/month, thats $630,000 in a 30-year morgage. We could buy every new Canon top of the line DSLR, plus every lens with the red stripe, for the next 30 years.
Oh well, we got to have dreams, otherwise life has no hope.

It CAN be done after marriage. Fathers day is just around the corner, and my wife said "Did you order your new lens yet? If you don't, it won't get here in time." Woohoo! Problem is, I took a few hundred photos at the ballet last night with my 50mm f1.4, and a few with a 200mm f4. The 70-200 f4 seems like it might be too slow now. I wonder if I can get the 70-200 f2.8 past her? :(
