View Full Version : 1DsMKII, Will it Come in Firmware Upgrade?

The current inability of the 1D series to automatically switch between CF and SD card when one gets full seems to be a very arbitrary and limiting SNAFU.
Do you think this can, and more importantly will, be addressed by a firmware upgrade?
Or the inability to have RAW recorded on the CF card (whose capacity is currently available much larger than SD cards) and jpegs on the sd card, when, if ever, will that change?

I agree on the auto-switch as long as it is a turn on/off option. If I can't do that then it needs to be left alone. Mind you I can't see why they can't make it do that.
Reason is that I keep my SD card available for just in case scenarios and would not want it to automatically switch over unless I am fairly sure I am not going to need it.
As to write RAW to CF and jpeg to SD card, although I think this would be a great feature; Knowing that the processor is allready at its limits, I suspect the only way they could do this would result in slowing down the write times significantly and taking longer to fluch the buffer. So I don't expect a firmwear upgrade to this one. Next camera maybe.
Just my opinion,

That would be a very important upgrade. Having the SD card save JPGs as backup while you record RAW shots on the CF cards would be something terrific. One SD card could back up a lot of CF cards automatically.
I temporarily misplaced a set of CF cards with 3/4 of a major event on it. Had there been an SD card sitting in the camera with a complete set of JPGs I would have been much less panicked than I was. Fortunately, someone found my wallet of cards laying in the middle of a golf course. (Thank you, photogods!)

All I can say is I have had the same wish for my 1D MkII for well over a year. Canon does not seem to want to do this "dual card" thing correctly .
IMHO The current implementation is reduced to little more than a novelty for many reasons... the only plus factor would be the built in RAID.. but even that is rendered less than usefull as SD card sizes lag behind the CF cards.. thus forcing you to use smaller cards to implement the RAID feature.
So for me the SD card becomes lttle more than a handy way to carry a spare. Switching from CF to SD internally takes just as long as swapping a CF card does.

I personally am not bothered about the mirror facility or have a desire to split JPG and RAW as I only shoot RAW without. Just about everyone I know, plus your's truly, simply use the SD card in an emergency. Rip out the CF card and continue on the SD if you either don't have time to swap CF cards or you have used your last one (faster than all the button pressing). That alone is a worth while feature of the dual card system.
IMHO, I don't think it is a killer feature that would make Canon re-write the firmware.

What Kenny said..
I have not used the SD cards that often, but yes, all you have to do is pull the CF and voila, you're writing to the SD. I always have an SD card in the slot, but very rarely use it and I don't have the desire for my camera (slow it to a crawl) to be writing to two different cards in two different formats.

I didn't take into consideration the fact that it would slow the writing speed to a crawl, as you say. If that's the case, I'll live without it.
I guess It'll come when the Digic III does.
