I searched, but nothing much came up. Are there any Chow Chow owners on the forums?

Let's start a Chow Chow thread for all the Blue Tongue lovers out there

We just picked up our new girl this past weekend. This is Honey, and she is 4.5 yrs old. We picked her up from a breeder as a retired mom. She's had two litters of pups and had a hard time with it, so the breeder decided she'd be a better fit for a pet home. She's super friendly and sweet, loves attention from kids and everyone, and likes the outdoors. House-training is coming along slowly, since she was kennel trained at the breeder and needs to be used to being indoors. Chows also tend to snort like a pig instead of barking and growling, so she has quite the array of snorting sounds that she makes.

Look at that face! She's a hard one to say no to.

She looks a bit like a lion or teddy bear right now. Her coat should grow in over the next few months. They shaved her coat after she had puppies since she needed to spend time nursing the pups instead of being groomed.

And of course, the usual blue/black tongue of the chow.
The fairy tale behind it goes that one day when God was painting the sky blue, that he spilled a few drops. The Chow chow followed behind him and licked up the spills, and that is how they got a blue tongue :p

Hey all, do keep the Chow Chow pictures coming! I have an Eurasier - I'm not wishing to highjack :). It is derived in part from the Chow. Many of them, including my two, have the royal blue tongue - and black nails. I have searched the web in vain for a good sample of this foundation breed and all I find is the type illustrated in the dog show images posted by briarlow. Thanks to OP for posting a more traditional type of Chow. More, please!

More traditional? Don't understand the comment tehe original photo's are of one that has been clipped so the coat is different due to this only. Looks the same as the others to my eye.

Your "puppy" has nice face, to my taste at least. My web search turned up nothing but the wrinkle-faced kind. I'm glad that yours has a good personality too.

I don't have a Chow (I'm owned by an Aussie), but I am a fan. I don't get a chance to see too many around here. I look forward to seeing more blue-tongue loves.

I have an Eurasier

Thanks for posting. I've heard of a lot of breeds, but this is one that's new to me. Just did a quick search, very pretty dogs. I'll have to look into them.

I had forgotten about this thread, Honey has become my most photographed subject since last August. I had just posted a few pictures in the big Best dog photo thread.

Her hair has grown a TON since we got her, and she has the full Chow coat now (along with the shedding, my goodness!). She actually looks like a different dog now compared to when we brought her home in August.

She's still a sweetheart though and always seems to have a smile on her face somehow.

Beautiful! Re the coat, congratulations. Our Eurasiers, derived in part from the Chow, are shedding now. We'll be able to reassemble three or 4 new dogs from what we will be brushing out in a month or so. They think that gentle grooming is a form of petting. Good luck with yours.

Think of these two as our Honorary Chows. My first link to website under construction. I'm thinking of this a friendly and tolerant audience :)

Your dogs look beautiful as well, are they all yours?? that's quite the pack you've got.

She started blowing her winter coat about a month ago, so we're just about finished up with the winter shedding as the summer coat starts to come in. And yes, I'm pretty sure I've brushed out enough fur to make a few medium size dogs, and I don't even want to think about how much I've vacuumed and swept up throughout the house, lol. She's a great dog though.

Just to clarify - the first post with pics of my dog was when her coat was shaved down. Chows are traditionally a fluffy, long hair, double-coated breed; these are the kind most people think of and they're the rough coat variety. They also come in smooth coats which is a slightly shorter coat but still a pretty thick double coat.

Absolutely beautiful dogs, Meanderthal. My favorite photos are 20, 24, and 30. Easy site to navigate as well.

Thank you, Tortie. The two on the bench in front of the apple tree are ours. Jessie and Patronus. Other dogs visit. Have had a chow mix too, really nice dog, but can't find the image. And I'm not wishing to hijack this Chow thread...

This is Buddy. He's not a pure Chow, but a mix, we think, with Corgi and some Aussie. He's got the coat, tail and partial black tongue of a Chow, the short legs with turned out front paws of a Cardigan Corgi and the head and ears of an Australian Shepard.

The swirling brown colors are nice, he almost looks like one of those peanut butter-fudge brownies, haha.

My parents have an Aussie, they're good dogs too.

Yes, Buddy is a god looking dog. The head and the thoughtful attitude are Chow-like alright. Give him hug.
