I know I should be able to remember things like this, but hell I just turned 55 and memory cells in my brain ain't what they used to be.
When you turn on your camera do you check the ISO? OK, so you do! Well I often don't remember that the previous night I was shooting at ISO 800 while consuming a few cans of beer before I shut down the camera and my brain. So I turn the camera on next session and of I go on a bright sunny day blazing away at ISO 800. I usually get the hint after a while and correct the ISO but shots get wasted.
Would it be possible for CAnon to do a firmware upgrade so we gan set a C.Fn to (say)..
0 = ISO stays the same as when shut down
1 = ISO resets to 100 on startup
2 = ISO stays at a user defined level at startup.
Can a firmware change do such a thing or am I asking too much?

That would be helpful. I doubt ther are too many people here who haven't burned a really great shot because the last time they used it, they had the ISO cranked up, and here they are with the once-in-a-lifetime shot that's completely blown out.
Good idea.
How about a petition? (not!!!)

Thanks Belmondo, it's comforting to know I'm not alone on this one.
Assuming there was enough interest in such a C.Fn facility coming from the forum and Canon was willing, can a firmware update actually do this?

Yes, the ISO can be a pain.
I've done some night shots before, playing around at ISO1600 or 3200.
And then done the shots the following morning, and all I see is white. :p

I've done that too, a CF might be useful, but i'd like to be able to choose the ISO to default to. I might use it, but since I did it a couple of times I always check the camera settings before I put it away - ISO 400, Av, F4, auto white ballance, focus with the shutter button (CF4-0). I picked up the camera in a hurry the other day to take photos of a fire, I couldn't work out why AF wasn't working - i'd turned on CF4-1 and in the heat of the moment (no pun intended) I forgot about it.

Since I got my 20D, all I've been doing is experimenting with exposure, ISO, etc. so I've gotten used to check my settings pretty much any time I pick up the camera. Hopefully I won't unlearn this once I understand fully all the settings in my camera.

i have the patent!! jk
That would be a cool custom feature..... You could tell the camera to keep the current settings untill you manually power off (it would keep the curent settings when it goes on standby) or hold a button for 3 secs then when you power off or mash the button, Doing so would reset the camera to a preset standard
eg. iso 400 if manual av = 4 tv = 125
if AV then av = 4.0
if TV then tv = 200
etc etc... (lets email canon!!!)

Had the same problem this week!
Took some night shots at 800 ASA and forgot to put it back to 100.
When I used the camera the next day ,the first few pictures were taken at 800 untill i remembered to check.

Yes, it can.

Yes, gotta remember to check ISO speed. Why many complained about it not being visible in the viewfinder. If I am taking pix, my face is behind the camera - not looking down at it (so I can press Iso button and check,) so I'm trying to get in the habit of pressing the info button often. Gives me the iso, how much room left on cf card and time of day. You can tell I'm retired - I don't wear a watch anymore.

I have done this quite a few times even in the same day. It would be nice if when looking through the viewfinder it told the ISO as well as the other info. I agree that it would be nice to default to ISO 100 after shutting down, that would be a great feature to have.
