Upon very close inspection, you can see a bit of purple fringing around the outside arc of the moon, maybe a pixel wide. Not bad for a $200 US lens, in my opinion.
Maybe in one of my upcoming lifetimes I can afford the 400L.

I like the shot Malcolm. What causes the greenish tint near the crescent line? Green cheese? :)
I'm surprised it didn't take longer than 1/30 at ISO 100 to make that exposure, but then I haven't tried photographing the moon yet. Did you have it all the way out to 300mm? Thanks for posting the data.

If you want to get rid of the green just convert it to black and white :-)
The funny thing about the moon is that it is actually very bright. A full moon that fills the frame is brighter than the beach on a sunny day. The cool thing about pictures of the moon or other objects in space is that it is much cheaper to get a half decent telescope and an adapter for your camera than long focal length lens. I have some good pictures from holding my S400 against the eyepiece on my telescope.

I tried the telescope thing with my old P/S, but couldn't ever get anything other than a very blurry light spot.
Not sure why the greenish cast. AWB, maybe? (shrug) Yes, I was all the way out to 300mm.
At any rate, as the moon crept slowly towards the horizon, it turned a nice shade of orange (typical, since it's still fairly warm and muggy here). This one is at 1/3 second.
