the photo waiver i signed in order to shoot the show specified a one-time use for that specific outlet, so i can't cross-link photos here...but if you wanna see 'em, click below:

500 f/4 on a 40D, last couple of minutes w/ a 1.4TC on.
so that yielded an effective focal length of 1120mm.
fwiw, i was shooting @ 1/100th mostly...

so how was the video shooting? what ultimately happens to the footage? do you use the on-board mic for audio?

#'s 16 and 18 are pretty close... Lots of action and excitement conveyed in these pics... Must have been pretty intense... Good job.

Yep. The 70mm shots give a feel of how far away you were.
Opening image: Don't like the crop. (11 is better, cropped in post I guess)
Overall some strange framing (Paul on the left side, guitar neck cropped, plenty empty space in the right: For the watermark? ;))
Okay job for the circumstances.

1.4 * 500 = 700 unless I'm doing something wrong

rené thanks for the comments...i pretty much agree w/ everything you said.
some of the crop choices were because i didn't have a great deal of latitude of where to shoot, trying to thread the needle of my lens viewpoint between fans' heads in front of me. also, the screen behind Paul was notoriously bad for grabbing autofocus.
in retrospect, i was probably a little *too* tight in some instances and really should have tried my 5D2 on the big lens, but there wasn't really enough time.
for comparison's sake, you can check out the shots that the pro shooters for the two big dailes got:

hey now tim!! nice try under crazy circumstances!!! it almost makes me not want to shoot it even if the pass does come through. was there no platform for you to stand? did they escort you and your camera out after the time allotment? how long did you have to shoot? did you have tickets?

dang!!! i still haven't heard back on my pass but at this point i kinda hope i dont' get it. i already bought a ticket and it wasn't cheap. if they escort me out then am and going to have to walk home and drop my gear; by the time i make it back, the show will be over.
plus that far back with no platform? that is just crazy!
thanks for sharing.

Great job, Tim! I am clearly spoiled rotten as I don't think I'd put up with that treatment to shoot anything less than the Lord of the Universe.

I think most shows are like that now. I shot Kelly Clarkson @ OC Fair at the pacific amphitheater and we were allowed two songs (2nd and third) and were escorted in/out. The guards were keeping an eye any photog that fired prior to that. We were 1/2 way and no platform.
I think all these music managers are becoming paranoid with media dudes.
