View Full Version : Harmony infrared remote control

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience using universal remote controls, specifically the Logitech Harmony remote, to learn the IR commands for the remote used by the Rebel XT (I don't remember exactly what the model number is).
It seems that if I had a remote I could program the Harmony remote since it is a learning remote (You point your existing remote at it and it records the signal). But I don't have a real Rebel remote. Now if someone else had already done this then it might be available online (when you program a Harmony remote with new codes they are saved online for everyone else to share). Has anyone done this? Could anyone do this?
I don't really need a remote, but if I can get my Harmony to control the camera it might come in handy once in a while. I already have just about every other device in my house controlled by an infrared remote on that thing, even a fan.
Anyone?

I've got a pocketPC with Nevo on it and was able to use the instructions here
http://www.camerahacker.com/universal_remote/Nevo.html
I would assume that you would be able to try out the Canon VCR codes on the Harmony remote.
The code used in the link reproduces the RC-5 which has a 2 second delay before it takes the shot. If you can get it to learn the RC-1, that one has no delay at all.

So what you are saying is you'd rather spend $250 on the logitech remote vs $25 on the Canon RC-1?
Actually the RC-1 does have a 2 second delay, but its optional, it can be set to instant firing.

What I'm saying is that I have the Logitech remote ($100 at Costco) for the TV and was not planning to purchase a remote just for the camera. But if I can make my existing remote work then it might come in handy on those rare occasions when I might need it. I will probably never need it, but I thought it would be cool I could get the remote to work anyway.
Does anyone know the remote codes for my wife? That might be more useful.

I just read a review of it. The $250 was for the top of the line unit which seems to cover a vast range of devices. New profiles are downloadable from the web apparently.
Is your programable? If you can find someone with an RC-1 or similar you could probably teach it the codes from that? I guess the trick is finding someone near you with a Canon remote.

Try www.remotecentral.com for the Canon codes. I have the pronto ccf file that you might be able to import if the harmony software supports that format. I custom program the pronto's but haven't dealt much with the harmony line.

That is what I was hoping someone had already done. All the Harmony configuration is done in their web site (Good luck if they ever take the site down). When you create a new device profile (by programming your remote using an existing remote) I believe it saves that information online so others can use it.
Unfortunately, if someone has already done this then I need to know what they called it. There are already configs for the S1 and Pro1 (As Canon VCRs) but I don't think those will work.
I have also found this site (http://www.camerahacker.com/universal_remote/) that suggests that the MGA (or Mitsubishi) VCR codes work on universal remotes. Unfortunately, I can't find the correct deview for my Harmony.
But that does bring up a good point about using a cheap universal remote to simulate the RC-1 and RC-5. At least that is cheaper that the real deal.

Hi There...
I believe you can find Canon cameras under
Home Automation => Home Appliance => Canon => EOS-50
(or) => EOS-350D
I've got a 7D on the way and would rather try out IR trigger with a remove I already have (Harmony One) to see if it's worth getting a dedicated remote...

I already have a Logitec Harmony one remote (BTW is kicks ass), can I use this with my Canon 30D? Was checking the provided links and can't find anything...
