:o Hopefully I'm just being dumb, but my 580 on my 20D only stays on manual zoom in ETTL mode. I've read the manual which tells me to push the zoom button and rotate the wheel. The "M Zoom" flashes but does not change from "14 mm" when I rotate the wheel. I have the 17-85 EFS lense on the camera and I'm almost positive it used to zoom properly and could be set in either manual or automatic modes. Also, in automatic zoom mode, the manual says an icon will appear on the upper right corner of the screen in addition to the "M" going away to indicate the sensor size adjustment. This is not happening. Any suggestions? The "diffuser panel" is not extended nor is the catch light panel. I've jiggled them to and fro in an attempt to loosen anything that might be stuck in the sensor but to no avail. I'm desperate for any suggestions.

Does the 580ex have a 'flip down diffuser' like the 550ex. I know if you flip the diffuser down on the 550 it zooms to the widest setting and stays there...

Press the ZOOM button, the zoom indicator will flash, then spin the dial CCW beyond 105° manual setting and it will go back to auto. When in auto and attached to a camera that supports it, the zoom setting will indicate the nearest focal length to the lens attached to the camera at the time and will also show the "auto" icon next to the auto zoom value.

Double check your diffuser panel. Make sure that it is pushed in all the way.
