Hi, i've recently upgraded to a 10d from a compact. i love taking photos of everything and anything and thought i would take a step up and be a little more creative.

ok, so i bought a 10d and 28-80mm lens off ebay and i'm happy :D but what else do i need to buy? i'm going to be on holiday in the canary isles soon and will be attending a major music festival later in the year, both of which will offer great photo ops

i figure i need a telephoto lens, flash gun and a battery grip, but being on a budget (look at what i've already spent!) is there any alternative to getting the genuine canon accessories or should they be avoided like the plague?

and is there anything else i'm missing?

any advice would be greatly appreciated

thanks, john

Congrats on the purchase, and welcome to the forum :) One problem with this hobby is it's really expensive!

That lens should be fine for holiday pics. The other lenses you might want are a low light lens like the 50mm F1.8 or better yet a 50mm F1.4, or an 85mm F1.8. For a telephoto it depends on your budget - the 70-200 F2.8L IS is great but is expensive, the 70-200 F4L is great and is "only" about $550. There are cheaper consumer grade lenses (L are pro/high quality lenses), you can read about some here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=56752).

For a flash consider the Canon 420EX, or the Sigma Super DG 500 (or something like that). The super version is meant to be worth buying over the non-super version, I forget why.

You'll need memory, of course. You can buy as many cards as you want, or just buy 1-2 cards and a unit that copies them off the cards to a hard drive so you can reuse the same cards. Batteries are helpful, http://sterkingtek.com do good quality bats very cheap.

Accessories you might need: tripod and/or monopod, cord to trigger the camera while it's on a tripod (it's useful sometimes), flash diffusers (lightsphere II, stefan omnibounce, pocket bouncer 80/20, etc). There are any number of other accessories that might be helpful, have a bit of a read around this site and you'll hear about most of them soon enough :)

Just don't try to use it near masonite.

I don't get it. Masonite is "A trademark used for a type of fiberboard employed for insulation, paneling, or partitions".

The DG500 Super offers wireless master ETTL, which the non-super doesn't. That's why the Super gets recommended. Caveat: some people here have reported that their Sigma DG500 Supers haven't functioned correctly in a mixed Sigma-Canon flash setup, and Sigma has told them that they don't guarantee that would work.
