View Full Version : Sports Photography clothing

I was just wondering whether there is an open niche market for photographers clothing. I'm specifically thinking of the 'Under Armour' type of compression hot/cold weather clothing.
Is there anything you think could be included in designs that would make it more practical to use while shooting sport?
I was thinking of large collar-bone/shoulder pads sewn into the design - in case you don't have a monopod cover (or just to add as a supplementary level of padding) and velcro-closure memory-card pockets in the wrists (for temporary storage while changing cards in a hurry).
Are these ideas a bit daft, or are there others that could be implemented to attract photographers towards buying such items?

There are enough cargo type garmets out there to carry all the crap around. Not to mention waist packs and other type bags. Why not just spend the $15 on a monopod pad rather than $90 for an Under Armour Photog Supreme shirt? I usually put the memory card in my teeth while I do a quick card change. I don't think there is a big enough market for photography clothing.

Maybe I'm just bony but even with some extra padding in the monopod cover, my shoulder gets sore by the end of a long day.
Thanks for the input - I'll cease this particular line of thought. :)

Something you could do, and it's been discussed here on POTN, is to make a thicker monopod cover. Fabric stores usually have all the necessary materials to make such a thing. Talk to one of the local seamstress shops, or someone w/ an industrial strength sewing machine, and see if they can sew it up for you.

Why? I'm only one man. There may be a market for it and I'm just an idiot. Something I'm sure my ex-wife will attest to.;) Necessity is the mother of invention. Maybe there is a demographic of "bony-shouldered" photographers that will benefit from just such a product line.

What would be nice is better gloves for cold weather shooting. You just cant make the buttons out with thick gloves. A special finger tip area should be all that's needed. On real cold nights I even use the chem hand warmers but still need to hunt around for the buttons.

I use nomex flight gloves. They keep your hands somewhat warm and have good finger dexterity.

Northface makes an "ETip" glove (if you really need to use your iphone in the cold weather)

Not sure how warm they are compared to the ones linked above though.

I found some Field and Stream shirts at Dick's Sporting Goods, they have a great SPF for summer and dry quickly. They are typically about half the price of the Columbia shirts ($50.00). The football season runs from temps that burn you up in August, and then toward the end of the football season the temps especially earlier and later in the day will freeze you. One of the teams or associations I shoot for have historically been to Thanksgiving bowls and it is usually cold. Last season I purchased some Under Armor (no pun) that wick away the moisture and keep the heat from making you cold. I also wound up get an Aqua Tech rain cover because it has been known to rain also. The Aqua Tech cover provides to hand sleeves on either side of the camera. The sleeves do not provide glove like warmth but do make it possible, to shoot with the right hand bare. I have also found that there are some gun shooters winter gloves that have the tip of the index finger cut out to make them easier to use.
