I have the Canon EOS20D, the heaviest lens I have the 70-200mm. I need a fairly professional tripod. Can anyone advise me on what type and brand to go for?

I have both the 3001BPRO with 308RC ball head and the 3021BPRO with 468RC2 ball head. With my 20D and 70-200 f/4L I like the extra weight and stability of the 3021BPRO.

You will find that the two most popular brands (for good reasons) are Manfrotto and Gitzo. The most popular models appear to be the Manfrotto 3021 and the Gitzo G2220. There are better tripods made by both manufacturers, but these two meet the needs of most users at a relatively good price.

As for tripod heads, we would need to know your primary type of shooting (action, wildlife, landscape, etc.) as there are different styles of heads (ballhead, pan/tilt) for different tastes.

I have the Manfrotto 3021B Pro and the Manfrotto 488RC2. I like that combination. It allows for a seperate panning action and the flexibility of a ball head.

I've got the same (although here in Europe the names are different - the 3021B Pro is called 055 PRO B here) and I'm very happy with it.

I have the same thing, with the 70-200 F2.8, it works fine for me. DSmith - what do you mean "now that i figured out how to adjust the grip lock tension". I played with that dial thingy but it didn't seem to do much for me, maybe I haven't figured out yet!

I use the Gitzo G2220 with a RRS BH-55 ball head and find this combo very stable. I like the versatility of the G2220 as you can lock the legs at any angle and the center post also moves to
any angle. The ball head is also easy to use but a little on the expensive side.

Tim there is a allen screw at the base that tightend the tension. before i figured it out it would not support my bigma (50-500)

Thanks :) I must find and read the manual that came with it, it supports my 70-200 fine out of the box though :)
