View Full Version : 300D Firmware hack caused a problem

I installed the firmwear hack this morning after researching it very thoroughly (I need FEC!). Anyway, it messed up my autofocus capability. The camera can't seem to lock in on a focus and therefore won't take a picture. The only way it would take a picture was to change to manual focus. I was able to reinstall the Canon firmwear and the problem went away but bummer!
I wonder if Canon has changed something so that the firmwear hack can't be used with autofocus? I bought my camera new in Nov 2004.
I may have to replace my 420EX with the 550EX so I can have FEC.

The AF mode was probably set to AI SERVO (SE) and you didn't realize it.

That would be my guess too.

If that were the case, then a image not being in focus should not prevent the camera from taking the picture. My guess is that maybe an equivalent of C.Fn04 was set to use the "*" button for focusing. But that's just a guess since the original poster didn't say whether the camera is actually trying to focus and just can't get a lock or if the camera isn't even trying to focus.

With the hack you can select AI SERVO and it works, but the shutter won't release. Since AI SERVO doesn't lock focus, it is constantly re-focusing. The CF you mention is selectable with the hack but doesn't work.

I'm the original poster. I'm not very conversant about AI Servo focusing. But I can tell you that I was in AV and was trying to focus the camera by pressing down the shutter half way. It continually tries to focus and I am unable to take a picture. The shutter would not release while all the focusing was occuring.
Thanks for any help. Is there something about the firmware hack that can cause constant focusing?

Me again. Ok, I'm understanding now. Once the hack was applied, I have to go make sure it's not trying to use AI Servo all the time. There was a thread about a week ago to this effect.

I think I'll try the hack again. Yikes 3 firmware changes in one day - pushing my luck I think.
Thanks for clueing me in folks!

The left cross key button brings up the AF selection. Use the wheel to select. Your choices are SE, OS or AI. you should choose OS (one shot) or AI. Some folks claim to be able to use SE by quickly releasing the shutter release and quickly pressing it again, but that's not real AI SERVO imho. Good luck!

I re-installed the hacked firmwear and made sure the autofocus is set to OS and it seems to be working fine now.
Thanks!!

the new undatchable firmware moved the AF selection to the RIGHT button, while the LEFT one can be used to put the camera on manual focus. this means that pressing the left button it will allow you to fully press the shutter button. now (in AF SE mode) if you are fast enough to press left and the shutter button AT THE SAME TIME, here u go...
