Could get my self to spend the extra for the Canon L so I thought I would try out the Sigma lens. So far - So Good... have had to change how I shoot as it focuses really fast so I need to be very aware what the camera is selecting. To get it under control for Tennis I had to select only the center focus point as all the high contrast lines and fencing were causing some issues... but here are a couple samples from the first outing. Overall, keeper ratio has gone up dramatically. Image quality has been compromised as always due to reduction... cheers

Oh by the way -- these came straight from the camera - nothing done except to reduce to post. Camera is an old 10d that normally back focuses with canon lenses. Also the meter is malfunctioning so I had to guess at exposure. Waiting for sports to end so I can send it in for repairs.

Looks like you've got a winner. This lens was a stellar performer on my 10D.

It appears that you've guessed quite well!

It's a great lens ... I still miss mine every now and again!

This is my bread and butter lens for motorsports events. I too could not bear to spend what Canon was asking for the 2.8 non IS version. For the price Canon wanted I purchased the 70-200, 24-70, and the 1.4 teleconveter. Enjoy a really great lens.

This was the second superb high quality lens I ever owned.. and it was the lens that taught me what a difference good glass makes.... :)

Regardinf AF that is "too fast" :)
Try setting your 10D to CF #4 @ 1 and set the focus to AIServo.
The additional control you get from the AF being activated by the rear "*" button may be just what the Doctor ordered.

Croasdial, I have this lens for two weeks only & love it for the quality of photos straight from camera, sharp, contrasy & with lot of details :-)
You have made a good choice.

Cheers

This was my initial test shot from my 70-200 from a couple of weeks ago. Shot handheld, back of large church, no flash.

I think we're both going to love this lens.

Croasdail -- Look for me, with my Sigma 70-200 f2.8, down the block from you at the triangle sportsplex where I shoot (& play) ice hockey. Hockey is the toughest thing I've ever photographed - very fast, dark indoor lighting, high contrast, weird color balance. This lens is great, and makes it easy. It makes other sports shots a breeze, too.

Thanks all - I am looking forward to using it some more. I shot Mens Lacrosse yesturday and it did wonderfully well... I on the other hand have some more learning to do. Tracking the subject and Keeping the center focus on the subject was a challenge - every shot in focus... just not always of the intended subject.

DavidEB - look forward to seeing you around. I went to school up in Montreal and played a little and shot a little too... but that was the last time I shot hockey. I had all crummy equipement back then but I have some cool shots of Guy Lafluer. Maybe I will have to give it another try.
