Well, it was a day of track and field today - a first for me and a pleasant change. Here are some of the offerings from the high jump...

Excellent job stopping the action. The only thing I'd be interested to see is how they'd look from a very low angle looking upto the action to give asense of the height of the jump, but thats just me.

Great photos here!

Fair point GMosher. Sadly the bar wasn't particularly high. I shot these images sitting on the ground so as to eliminate the dreadful cluttered backgrounds that seemed to be everywhere! To give you an idea of the bar height (or lack of it), here's another shot... the red thingmy at the bottom is the mat...

Nice shots! Still getting to grips with my 1D MkII, just curious as to settings you have in camera, my shots seem to be washed out a bit, is it just saturation or other methods? I'm worryingly cluess when it comes to some areas of photography! lol

Cheers Pete. Nothing special to say about settings really. These were shot as jpegs since I was on a deadline... with all the in-camera parameters at zero except for contrast which was set to -1.

As for post-production, I have resized, added a little contrast to some of the images where needed and sharpened for the web. No additional saturation was added.

I suppose the key factors were getting the exposure pretty much spot on for every shot and being able to shoot at very low ISO (100-200).

Thanks PaCiFiSt.... in general these were shot at 420mm (300mm f/2.8L + 1.4x extender) at 1/1000s, f/4 or f/5.

I like that 6th shot, the athletes contorted legs with his feet in opposing directions adds something for me

Thanks Aggy... I didn't shoot many from that particular angle... but that pic worked out reasonably well.
