I shot this with my Xti and my new 70-200. Tell me how I could have made it a better shot. How can I make it crisper and sharper?http://i398.photobucket.com/albums/pp62/ghostetter/flower.jpg

i have no idea if you sharpened in pp or not. but, i would say three things with no information. 1) tripod. 2) sharpen in pp. 3) (perhaps most important) wait for ANY wind to disappear. the slightest breeze with soften flowers, especially those on longer stems like coneflowers.

pretty good shot, imo, though.

I don't think a tripod is needed for flowers during the day. I often shoot flowers without a tripod and get great results. Remembering the 1/focal length * crop factor rule generally gets me good results.

I would agree 100% on waiting for any breeze to stop. Especially with a large aperture/shallow DOF. A slight breeze can throw your focus pretty quickly.

It was a pretty quiet day, almsot no breeze, so I didn't use a tripod. I have done no pp on this, so I'll try that. Not sure what to expect right out of the camera. Thanks for the input.

i find my shots are a bit softer than i like straight out of the camera. and, the transfer from camera to dpp/photoshop to hosting site to potn is a habitual complaint from people as to ruining the sharpness. seems the more your picture travels, the more sharpness it loses.....or at least thats what i am figuring from what ive read/heard.

the tripod comment is more for late/early day shots with telephoto lenses. if you have great lighting, you arent shooting at noon. therefore, you will either be bumping iso or using tripods with a lot of lenses, especially those longer than 200 with a 1.6X sensor like the XT/XTi, whose equivalent is really close to 360mm and transferring to a 1/360 shutter speed, from what i've read.

not claiming to be an expert. just regurgitating what i've read here.

why do people send picture of flower like these???? All it shows is that you can push the shutter button.

Very helpful post. Why not explain what he could have done better. He did ask for it in his orignal post.

I was practicing with depth of field, color, lighting, and general experience taking pictures. I do appreciate all comments, both good and less good, as it helps me learn the craft of photography.
