Hi,

As a total novice and aspiring to be newbie, could someone please stoop to answer the following:

- what is the diffs between minature and micro photography eg. what would taking pics of 1 to 4 sq. cm be?, things like bark, sandgrains etc
- the equipment required for above, what, and at what costs, and would you suggest 2 nd hand (broke school teacher you see)
- underwater photography, how and how much to get into

A lot of people here are into Macro photography. Flowers, bugs and such. The Canon EF 100 f/2.8 macro is the go to lens for that. As for sandgrains though, that would be micro photography and then you are looking at adapter mounts to attach to a microscope probably. Not sure if we have any experts in that end of things.

There is a broad range of costs. The 100 macro is around $430 but that needs to be attached to a camera body ($150 plus for film, $700 plus for digital). 2nd hand is fine, but be careful to read descriptions. If an offer sounds too good to be true it definitely is. If an offer sounds vaguely suspicous it definitely is.

Dive housing can be fairly expensive. You can find disposable cameras good to 10 feet for fairly cheap. Otherwise something like a Canon A95 with its dedicated dive housing (about $500 total I think) would be a good start.
