So,

I found this Skydiving out fit the other day.. So i dropped by again today hoping to get some action shots.

Pulled up along side the drop zone area and there was someone else there with what looked like a D40 ( decent camera )

So.. i get there setup my gear ( 1dMark3 / 70-200 with 1.4TC ) grab a seat and wait and the guy aproaches me....

Someguy: " gee... Nice camera what that run you... thousand bucks.."

Me: "Yea something like that... How are you doing"

Someguy: "You shoot professionally"

Me: "yea i try and make a living at it"

Someguy: "Yea well, if i could afford some big fancy camera like yours i would shoot professional shots too you know.."

Me: " never know... Here have a go at it.. ( Handing my camera over)"

Somguy: "your a real *******" then he got in his car and drove away!

I suspect that he knew owning a 1DMk3 wouldn't make him a pro, and by you handing him the camera to take a few shots - you would realize this once you got home and looked at them. I think he figured you were calling him out.

He's an ass none the less. I too would have jumped at the opportunity to play with a 1D before I had one.

He could have used his own CF Card.. I mean i am all for working with other photographers... I stop almost everyone i see with a camera and say hi.. lol

I am not sure if he was looking for me to be the ahole by bragging about the cost of the camera, or going on about being some sort of pro.. lol No idea..

No loss at my end.. just one less friend in the world :D

Michael,

Is it Canada, or are you just some kind of freak magnet?

Or maybe you just met the real Ken Rockwell.

You know its funny as crap... I can really understand what is going through some of the heads of many here..

However if you actually knew me... you would spend a weekend with me and say sonofabitch... He does attract the crazies!!!

Sounds like the guy was a bit of a jerk - i think he was afraid that he might find that the "dark side" wasnt as good as he thought it was and might have to trade his Nikon in.

Either that or he thought "if i try that , i might want one and its gonna cost a damn fortune so i'd better not"

It's definitely Canada.

I recall a friend and i were out shooting when we were starting and an old guy came up to us, swaying, looking at my friend.

He pointed at him and said "REMEMBER. The ANGER." then walked away.

So yes, it's just Canada. Nothing to worry about

What would've been real funny is if he took your camera, said, "oh, I just happen to have this on me," pulled an EF 16-35/2.8L II out of his pocket, and started shooting real professional photos, and asked you if you would mind if he registered a custom function or two while he was at it.

I'm just shocked he let the guy hold his camera, talk about trusting. I'm about to buy my first DSLR and I can tell you that when I see someone holding a big fancy camera I usually think the guys a genius just for knowing how to use it

Many, many times...

The big difference: The folks in the infield at 'Dega (or any track for that matter) are what they are. They aren't posers and wannabes like the chucklehead Michael ran into.

Now, if you really want to see some scary folks, check these out!

O guess part of my issue is that i like to reel them in :D

I mean when he siad that must have run me a thousand bucks.. I could have said nope try 7 thousand.. lol

When he said you shoot professionally... i could have said yup every day.. lol Its like he was wanting me to make myself come out wrong or somthing..

I just waited for my chance and when he made the comment that, maybe most would have lost it on... I just handed him my camera.. Its like hanging the villiage troll just enough rope to hang themselves with!

When it comes to photography, i speak with everyone... Hell shooting my sunflowers the other day i was having this cool coverstaion with this very very mature grandmother who was out with her point and shoot sony camera taking pictures of the flower heads.. At the end of the converstaion i ended up asking her if she used email and promised to fire her off the shots i took and would give her a free 8x10 of her choice if she liked them.. Just becuase she was cool person to chat it up with and she kept me company for an hour in the field :D

I don't go looking for trouble.... My wife says i am just cursed.. and if you think it's bad in photography, you should see the crap that happens to me in my other hobby... Scuba diving :D
