OK, I am off to Silverstone for the British F3 + GT championship on Sunday this week and I am going with the specific interest of taking some photos. Really it is trying to combine two passions as it where, I work in motorsport and I love taking photos...

This will be my first time trying to take 'serious' motorsport photos so I was wondering if you had any hints and tips for me.

My kit is:

Canon 40D
100-400mm f/4-5.6
24-205mm f/4
50mm f/1.8

I guess the 100-400 and 24-105 will be the most useful.

Is anyone else on here going on Sunday?

Yeah I would say that the 100-400 will be your friend, though the 24-205 maybe be easier to start with.

Lots of tips on here about panning - assuming that's what you want to do - but it's a case of practice, practice, practice. Stick your camera on Tv mode and start at around 1/200th and work down. Have the focusing on AI Servo or AI Focus. Start with panning at lower zoom levels then work your way up. Pick up your subject nice and early and follow it through as well. Use high speed continuous if you feel comfortable (seems to be debate on here about using that but it works for me).

Try to find somewhere where you can shoot without a catch fence between you and the cars - never been to Silverstone so can't advise as to where exactly sorry!
