Hi all, this is my first post on this forum of some shots.

I love my metal, love my music overall, my biggest passion aside from my lovely partner (yeah I know, soppy as hell).

Anyhow, I'm a newbie, been shooting now for about 2 months and playing with my camera as much as I can.

These were shot with a Canon 500D using a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens. I haven't mastered using M mode yet, so used AV instead.

More can be seen on my Flickr page for those interested. Any critique you can offer would be greatly appreciated by a very enthusiastic newbie!

Hey Mindi,

Some nice shots there... that 50mm 1.8 will be the best investment you've ever made for live music photography!

So the Bald Faced Stag has a decent lighting rig now?! :)

Tell me about it! $150 for this lens is a bargain. I can only fault it's bokeh which can get a bit crusty at times. Otherwise, it's a wonderful lens.

I've been thinking about hitting up a Canon 50mm f/1.4 or a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 as my next step up... while faster aperature would be nice, Im wondering if I should go wider too...

Anyhow - their lighting... yeah it's okay... mind you, when their red lights come on, your shots die big time. You have to grit your teeth through your shooting knowing potential shots are getting ruined by that awful red! Overall though, I'm starting to like the BFS as a shooting venue, it's okay and you can get right into a bands' face.

Welcome to POTN!
Forum seems to be a bit slow at times, maybe because it's summer in the northern hemisphere ;)

I've been thinking about hitting up a Canon 50mm f/1.4 or a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 as my next step up...

The EF 50/1.4 is better then the EF 50/1.8. Yet the bokeh is not good either, and it can be soft wide open.
There's a whole thread with samples here.
Edit: Oops, forgot the link (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=139085)

I'd also look into the Sigma 50/1.4.

On the images: Some good moments. Quite a few are "more of the same" however.
Even if you only use one lens, try to get more variation. Move your feet! ;)

#1 and 6 are quite nice, and the last one is "different". Good :)

Welcome!

On the shots: nothing too much wrong with them, but not really great aswell. All quite a bit straightforward, standard. Number 2 is definitely my favorite, I think it's far out the most interesting shot of the ones you posted. On some of them some distracting elements around the subject. hands/arms of other musicians, some lighting... Really keep an eye on the surroundings around your subject(s) while shooting and when necessary crop your shots afterwards.
