I quote -
The Confederation of Cinque Ports is a historic series of coastal towns in Kent (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kent) and Sussex (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sussex), at the eastern end of the English Channel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_Channel) where the crossing to the continent is narrowest. It was originally formed for military and trade purposes, but is now entirely ceremonial.
The name is Norman French (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norman_French) for "five ports" – the five being Hastings (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hastings), New Romney (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Romney), Hythe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hythe,_Kent), Dover (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dover,_England), and Sandwich (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandwich,_Kent). They are supported by the two antient towns (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Antient_towns&action=edit&redlink=1) of Rye (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rye,_East_Sussex) and Winchelsea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winchelsea), whose councils traditionally maintained defence contingents for the realm of England.
