The caption says there are three major bridges in Maastricht, and that two are old and stone. Henk's bridge doesn't look old, and it doesn't look like stone. I think Henk carefully and sneakily blended the arched support into the sky.

Monty got it right. It is the "Hoge Brug" (High Bridge) a bridge built specially for pedestrians and cyclists across the Maas River in Maastricht. The elevator is for the disabled. The bridge was built in 2003 and I took the photo in the (northern hemisphere) autumn of 2008. I can recommend Maastricht as a very nice and photogenic city.

Last time was '89. Obviously different back then. Fairly well westernized compared to the rest of the region at that time (Pepsi, KFC, Chevys, Sesame Street, etc...). Guess you could compare it to Jordan, but more $$ due to exports. As a teen, I was probably shielded from discussions regarding civil war, politics, etc., so I can't tell you much there.
