Actually, this was taken from the tarmac side of the airport, so technically we were departing on a plane. But now that you mention it, it's strange to see "departure" and "arrivals" signs on that side of the airport.
Here's a shot from that walkway looking the other direction

I was confused because Newcastle is in the "North Coast" region according to this site (http://www.visitnsw.com/zone/north_coast.aspx) and it's not in the "Heart of Country (http://www.visitnsw.com/zone/Heart_of_Country.aspx)" so my last guess was "Sydney Surrounds (http://www.visitnsw.com/zone/Sydney_Surrounds.aspx)".

The proper name of the place got some of the words in it...... But this is not the proper name for the place. (edit:)It is another garden which I have never been to yet :)
There is some confusion about "where we belong"... Most people here would say that we belong to the "North Central Coast" or the Hunter region. The Tourist Office puts us on the North Coast though The place you are looking for is definitely in the Hunter Region.

But to find the place where it resides we have to know what kind of building it is... :)
So it is not a government building (local, state or federal) it is not an educational institution, and it is not a convent. So what the heck is it... ???

To be honest I do not know what this building is. However, once you starting narrowing down the geographic location it should be easier to guess. There are pictures out there very similar to mine. In fact, once you or someone else figures it out, the second image to appear in a google image search is a photo very similar to mine.
To answer your questions though, it is not a bank, office building, or hotel.

I am going to backtrack here for a sec and clarify something. When Henk asked if it was a government building I thought he meant a gov't office, courthouse, or something along those lines. The building and place is preserved by the state so technically it is a state building. However, it's not a building where government conducts their business. But again, all I'm looking for is the name of the general place it's located in. Sorry if this has caused any confusion.

Is this an island, or part of Central America?

Okay okay. I was not aware of an actual Oceania region around Australia. The Oceania (see map (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:1984_fictious_world_map_v2_quad.svg)) I was referring to was going along with the 1984 George Orwell reference Henk and Roy were making. So from this post forward we will cease with the 1984 references to avoid further confusion!

It is not part of Central America (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_America) or an island.

Not your fault, BmanH... You referred to "1984" and we should have checked Orwell's Oceania... :)
Today's Oceania is the Pacific area including Australia and New Zealand (at least in my Telecommunications book :) )
