This stretch of the canal is about a mile from where I grew up. I never did understand why they called it the Figure of Three, as there are only two. Maybe it's that there's three levels of water.

May be I am I am nitpicking but I think Roy's answer was not quite correct. There is no common "corner" for Charing X Rd and Leicester Square. This theatre (the Hippodrome that figured in WAIN a while ago ) is actually on the corner of Charing Cross Rd and Cranbourne St. Cranbourne St is connecting Charing Cross Rd with the Leicester Square.
A very long time ago at the age of 18 I actually started on "the knowledge" (and gave up soon after to take on more worthwhile endevours) but some things stick in the mind.... :)

Technically, you are correct - but if you asked any Londoner to meet you on the corner of Leicester Square and Charing Cross Road, this is the spot that would be understood by it.
