The roof tiles don't look typically British because they're not, they're Dutch (or something like that).

Culross was one of the first mining towns (it has one of the first, if not the first under sea coal mine). Ships would come to Culross to pick up cargoes of coal and they brought with them tiles as ballast (they'd replace the weight with coal for the onward journey).

These buildings have been largely intact since they were built in the 1600's. Remarkably, there's paintings on the wooden ceilings that are still perfectly legible.
