Hi,
This is my first submission on POTN. Here's a couple of photos I took this weekend while I was in the crowd. The Adams, a Jakarta (Indonesia) local indie band. They sound a lot like Weezer.
Comments and critique are welcome. Thanks

"If your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough" is a famous quote by Robert Capa and I think it really holds true in performing arts.
It looks like your lighting situation was zero fun and the first shot is decent, but the shots don't pop or have any "oomph". Getting to the front of the crowd seems like a great way you could have improved your shooting in this situation. In your face shots of performances can be some of the most interesting shots ever.

I think they just need to be displayed here as larger photos.

Yup, the lighting was awful. Small band got the small stage and small everything. But anyhow, the band has quite big crowds.
Yes, I totally agree with Capa's quote. I wasn't close enough. I didn't have any photo pass. It was a struggle to get to that point. And to make things worse, I don't have any tele lens yet. Next time I'll make sure I'm in front of the crowds or maybe get a decent tele lens. Thanks for your kind comments and critiques.

I'll post larger photos next time. I promise. :) Thanks.

Big difference between getting close or using a long lens from further away ;)
I like the second shot.
First needs a crop; subject has way too much headroom. (Second is also rather centered, but it works better there IMO. Might also improve with a crop, but a less rigorous one.)

About the big difference, can you explain a little bit more?
Is this any better?

I'd probably go with something a little less agressive ;)
like this:

On the difference between getting closer vs. zooming (or cropping for that matter): Getting closer changes perspective. Zooming in or cropping later does not.
Perspective can be a very powerful "image shaping tool".
(And I think thàt is what's meant by Robert Capa's quote.: If you are closer, the perspective is different, and the viewer will be more "engaged" instead of be "spectator from afar")

Oh I see. That seems a lot better. :)
And thank you very much for the explanation. That "engaging" part must be the feeling like I was at the show everytime I look at a nice photo of a show.
