I'm just a photographer with a bird guide! I think this is a Fox Sparrow. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Looks like what we in the south call a Brown Thrasher.
They stay on the ground for the most part ant thrash around the leaves looking for bugs.

Scott,
That is a stunning image. How close/what lens? My 20D shutter is REALLY loud, allowing only 1 shot! What camera do you use, and is the shutter restrictive for wildlife photography? Sorry for so many questions.

Martin.

In this months edition of the Missouri Conservationist, they show a bird that looks exactly like this except the eyes are totally black. They call it a wood thrush.

Thank you! I was using:
20D(Standard shutter release) Cfn. 4-1 for focus on * button)
Sigma 500mm f/4.5 EX APO HSM
Wemberley Head
Gitzo G1228 Tripod
I was about 50-75 feet away behind a blind.

Hi Scott, one of the first things you look at for bird ID is the beak. Sparrows are seed eaters and have cone shaped beaks. The guy in your excellent pic looks like a wood thrush to me also.

I got a glimpse of one about two weeks ago here on LI, NY, (not to far from Brooklyn, NY). I saw him for a moment in the woods, on a branch. I managed to get one shot of him from the back. Not nearly as good a shot as yours. It was the first one that I had ever seen.

Thanks. The group of pictures I took this past weekend were much better then the previous week for a single reason. I took out the polarizer and upped the ISO for faster shutter speeds.
