View Full Version : Anyone compare Canon 28 2.8 vs. Sigma 2 1.8?

On Photonet - these are rated nearly on par with each other. I know there are plenty of Canon only fans out there - but has anyone tried out or owned the sigma? I like the idea of a faster lens if possible as I love naturally lite shots. This would be a traveling lens that will get abused in airline overhead compartments - so I am trying to spend minimal yet still get decent quality since I will likely not get back to the locations I take it. Any thoughts or experiences are welcome.

I looked at the reviews of the Sigma 1.8, and was pretty impressed. It seems to compare well with the Canon.
The only thing that kept me from pulling the trigger on it was that I'd have to get it via mail order. The last time I put a Sigma lens on the 300D, I got the dreaded "Err 99". Even though I'd be able to return it if that happened, it's a hassle I'd just rather not deal with.
The overwhelmingly attractive sales lass at the local Ritz Camera told me that they could order it and, if it wasn't right for me, I could bring it back within 30 days. The down side there, of course, is that I'd get to pay the Ritz Camera price.
If I can find one locally that works, I'd be on it like white on rice...

Good to hear - I notice you have the 85 f1.8 too... which I was going to order at the same time... I have the 50 f1.4.... so I should be good to go for now... at least that is what I tell my wife for right.
