Friend of mine has an S300. I have an S200. Except for the zoom, these two cameras are very similar. My friend just downloaded the latest firmware from Canon for the S300 and - lo! - he now has 30 seconds of video time on his camera (it was 10 seconds just like on my S200). When I found this out, I dashed home hoping to find a similar upgrade for my camera. (10 seconds of video record time is *barely* usable; 30 seconds is a world of difference.)

Sadly, there is no upgrade for the S200 and Canon Tech Support says there is no plan for one. Has anyone had any luck persuading Canon to release upgrades (that is, to support existing users)? Anyone care to try an email campaign to Canon Support? There must be lots of S200 users who would love that extra video time also!

It's simple trade your camera with the new one (S230) and the problem's solved.

Thanks Voltus - Do you perhaps work for Canon?

The point is, I'd like Canon to support their old product rather than having me come up with another $400 or so for the new one.

If they can support the S300, why can't they support the S200? Afterall, they still sell the S200 - why not support it?

the S200 does have 30sec of video, check the resolution settings. but i will agree, 10sec is practically usless.

I should be clear here. I am talking about 320x240 video mode. This is the lower limit of what I consider usable video. It is the mode that my friend's S300 now has 30 seconds record time while I have only 10 seconds. That is, the upgraded software for the S300 will support 30 seconds record time at 320x240 resolution.
