I want to be able to use my 420EX with a lightstand and umbrella, however I have no idea on how to attach an umbrella to the 420EX.
What hardware do I need to accomplish this?

Sorry for my ignorance.

:)

Don't apologize for your ignorance. It's the smart people that make it hard for the rest of us to look good!

Thanks!
Also what would a good umbrella be to start with? I really have no clue about all this lighting stuff, but I do have a 580EX & 420 EX and thought I would start experimenting.

30" is the general size for umbrellas

Should I get a bounce umbrella or a shoot-through one?

I use a photoplex with a removable black cover, so it can be either a shoot-thru or bounce set up. Works great!

Umbrellas are relatively cheap. Unless you get the big ones, that are capable turning in to a octodome like softbox.

In anycase I usually like to have the ability to convert them from bounce to shoot thru. They may only ad a few dollar to the overal cost, but you get flexibility.
