View Full Version : Developing a portfolio?

Yes, I know, a really, really premature question, seeing as I don't even own the camera yet...but anyway...

I was wondering just how one develops a portfolio. If I were to take a "job" shooting someone or something for credit only (no fees, therefore not for hire), copyright retention, single use only (i.e. a website shot, or personal use for the model, with copyright on the print), is this a good way to start?

And what sort of other things that I don't know should I know before I start trying to do this?

(And yes, while it may be premature, I have several subjects ready, willing, and able to pose for me...and I'm itching to do them...so I'm trying to understand the parameters prior to being in the middle of it and then figuring it out...)

Thanks in advance - I really could use the guidance.

Noni, Read the thread about giving away free work. Don't get these guys going by mentioning free LOL

You develop a portfolio by taking about a dozen really excellent shots that illustrate the talent you're trying to sell. Doesn't matter how you got them.

I do know that's the worst word you could use right now...and I have to say, I know exactly what they're talking about. My conflict arises because I don't have subjects to work with; and it's not for newsies or for glossies, either (I am justifying myself here...but to me, at this point, it is an equal trade; I get some experience and some shots, and they get something they can hang on their wall...)

I am not trying to rehash the "free" v. "paid" argument whatsoever...just trying to make it fair. I've got two pregnant friends who want shots done, so I'm going to do that for copyright and they get a print or two for their memory books/walls, and my hair place is developing a website so I may be able to do some candids for them in trade for getting my hair done. I've had some parents ask me if I do children, but I don't know about that...I'd rather just play with the kids and see what happens (cadid again...I'm not really into posed kids...). The cost/fee there would be dinner and drinks, most likely, with me retaining all rights to the photos, and they get some for personal use only. Very clear upfront, and in releases and everything.

That's perfect. I don't have a dozen shots I'd consider "excellent," but I will someday, and that's when I'll need to use this info. Thanks, PG, I do appreciate it. I'll work for the Glorious Dozen, and see what transpires. (It's gonna take me about 10 years, but hey, I've got that. ;)
