View Full Version : Lens Rebates Over, Now What?

I was contemplating getting a 70-200f/2.8IS with the rebate but I don't need it until January 2010 for a trip so the question is, did I miss out on the $200 rebate or will I be able to get a rumored Mark II model before January 2010. I already have an f/4IS so it's not like I really need the reach or anything like that.
Count me as one of the hold outs, waiting to see if the rumors are true or not.
What would really make my day is a 24-105f/2.8IS. Now, that would be a real prize.

some of the rumors i've heard of lately......
100 f/2.8 IS Macro
200 f/3.5L IS Macro
70-200 f/2.8L IS II
50-200 f/2.8L IS
24-105 f/2.8L IS
15mm f/2.8 USM Fisheye

24-105 f/2.8L IS
It almost seems unlikely to ever see this because it would dominate sales so much that several other lenses would be next to obsolete. I know I would snatch one up at the first chance. That'd be a dream come true.

dunno. just read about it on canon rumors.....

had also heard a rumor that my 135mm f/2L will be discontinued, to be replaced by an IS version (considerably more expensive).

Oh, it could totally be true and I pray every night before I go to sleep that it is.

Last Christmas you could get a 70-200 2.8 IS for $1381. So don't worry the spring rebates only lasted 1 day anyway before they jacked the prices. If the Mark II comes out soon the best time to buy will be right before your trip. You were smart to wait.

I plan to wait until just before at this point, anyway. You make a good point, though, about them jacking the price up. It's selling for $1899 (free shipping) at B&H right now. A bargain at half the price.

Right.
Most likely are the macros and the 70-200 2.8L IS IMHO.
Myself, I have the money for the 70-200 2.8L IS right now. If I wanted to I could go out and get it tomorrow. But I'm waiting and seeing. Rumours are that Canon will announce something in the next couple of weeks (probably in stores early October) so worth the wait right about now.
Plus, if you have the money for it now, the extra wait gives you time to save for the inevitable price increase the mark II will have over the mark I.

I am in the same situation. The rumors caused me to hold off. I admit it. Of course, if I didn't listen to the 5DMkII rumors last year I would own a high end Nikon crop body today. Had I done that, I would really be sick about it today.
Right.

LOL the 5Dmkii is certainly a nice body.
Wait for the new announcements for sure. :)
I REAAALLY want a new lens, but I need to wait. ;)
Though...even if they do bring out the lens(es) I want, I'll have to wait a few weeks/months longer to get them. So it's a bit bitter sweet (though at the end of the weeks/months wait it will be sweeeet!).

Now those would be some heavy lenses! That said, where do I sign up for the 24-105 f/2.8 IS? That would put my pondering over 24-70 f2.8 vs 24-105 f4 IS to rest for certain.

Wouldn't a 24-105 2.8 be ridiculously big?
That's what I'm trying to work out myself.
I know the 24-70 2.8 is big. I know the 70-200 2.8L IS is big. But I'm not convinced the 24-105 2.8 IS would be bigger than the 70-200 2.8L IS. People seem to handle the 70-200 2.8L IS OK, so I guess it wouldn't be too bad.
THOUGH, I don't know if the wider you go, the bigger things get... I'm not a lens designer.

The 24-105 will never be f/2.8, the 24-70 will never have IS. In the event that both of these lenses are discontinued, a model with the best of both worlds would probably arrive. Possibly a 28-85 f/2.8 IS? :)

A 24-105 2.8 would be amazing.
I was thinking actually that a 24-105 2.8IS as a replacement to the 24-70 2.8 keeping the 24-105 f/4L IS would be a nice idea. Then Canon would have
24-105 f/4L IS
24-105 f/2.8L IS
70-200 f/4L IS
70-200 f/2.8L IS
Good choices and sorta makes the 24-70 vs 24-105 more like the 70-200 f/4 IS vs f/2.8 IS debate.
:D
Would I sell my 24-105 f/4L IS to get a 2.8 IS. I don't know... I probably would I think.

LOL yeah.
Oh and I read on another thread here that a 24-105 2.8L IS would be a very hard camera to make (small) because it covers WA and Tele in one lens (2 different types of design or something).
So basically, unless they have some new way of making lenses, it doesn't seem very likely at all.

ok, talked to a bud on another forum, and today's press con was regarding the powershot division. he tells me the DSLR press con isn't until friday. oops.
bummer about the 24-105. maybe on friday they'll come out with a totally sweet lens announcement that noone was expecting that will finally help me make up my mind regarding a replacement for my kit lens..... like a 17-55mm f/2.8 IS EF lens with no flare issues, no "bad copy" issues, excellent image quality/sharpness, and a red ring.
a man can dream, can't he? :D

one good thing to take away from today's press con (imo)...... canon went from 15mp on the g10 to 10mp on the g11...... are the megapixel wars over? will the 60D come back down to earth with it's megapixel count?

We can only hope. I think Canon have finally got it. IQ over MP. :D
The fact the marginally better ISO performance of the 40D caused many to choose it over the 50D (yeah, the timing of the 50D was a bit off actually, but I'll blame the ISO performance) may have them thinking about the MP race and how dumb it is really.

It would certainly be nice if the MP wars are over, but I'd still prefer they stay at least at 10. I'm on a pretty good yearbook staff and I've gotta say, printing full page photos from a 20D or 30D last year was pushing it as far as how far we could stretch it and still keep a nice resolution (sometimes after cropping a little bit).
Hopefully an all out low-noise war will step up in place of the MP. ;)

hmmm... personally I would wait as long as possible before buying it. unless you come across a very good deal. I waited until rebates hit, before making purchases. glad I did too. saved quite a bit. I am in a similar situation. I wish to expand my lens collection to include a macro... but I am not going to push the button until I read a press release with some new Lenses, or they drop some prices, or I find a great deal...
hope that helps answer your questions.
