Every athlete it seems has a style of their own when it comes to launching themselves through the air to jump as far as possible. Here are a few examples from today...

Hi gmen,

Excellent images. Quick question can you share your camera setting?

Which metering mode do you typically use to determine your exposure?

Hi JX...Thanks for your comments! I shoot in manual mode 95% of the time. I still carry my trusty Gossen Variosix F lightmeter with me everywhere I go and use this for a base incident reading. There will be times that I will tweak the exposure slightly to get the most out of the histogram.

great expressive shots..... question for you. Is there a best practice around shooting this event? I notice that most if not all shots are with the action coming towards you. Is this a personal preference or are side shots not appropriate for this event? Reason I ask as the more I shoot, the more I am figuring out that certain sports have very specific sweet spots for shooting and I am trying to gather as much of this info so I don't have to spend half the event figuring that fact out. Thanks and really nice shots.

Thanks Crosdail... On this occasion my task was to shoot certain athletes both for publication in this week's paper (i.e. the medal winners) and for future publication as 'stock' images. Therefore the head-on shot was the most appropriate as it was most likely to produce a clear view of the participant's face.

Also, since the runway behind the athlete is generally clear of clutter/people, it also allowed me to isolate them from the background more effectively. When I considered working the side view, there were all kinds of officials close to either side of the sandpit that would have been looming large in the background!

So I suppose it was a 'sweet spot' for me this time round.... but that's not to say it's the only way or the right way to shoot this particular sport. This approach certainly suited my 'style' of shooting as I like to shoot with long glass at a wide aperture, paying close attention to the backgrounds to ensure a 'clean' image wherever possible. Someone else may have shot the whole event with a stopped-down wide angle next to the pit! Each to their own and all that jazz...

long jump is fun to shoot, I always like the emotion in their facial expressions, i was stuck with the 85 as my only lens capable of shooting track indoors, great shots here though

*lol* That's what I was thinking as I was shooting it! As it turned out, she managed to stay relatively upright - more by luck than judgement I think!

I thought she just noticed she was jumping into an alligator pit instead of the sand pit.
