I have a laptop which I never use it because I'd rather use my PC, and it's a bit big to just 'take everywhere', therefore i'd like to get rid of it (it's getting old) and get a nice little netbook for surfing POTN in the coffee shop WIFI :D
My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite 2400
- 15.6" screen
- P4 (M) 1.6, 256mb RAM (only upgradable to 512MB I believe),
- 30gb HD, CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive, floppy drive
- includes XP Home recovery CDs
- battery lasts maybe half an hour, otherwise the laptop is mint cause I never took it anywhere.
- I will be including a wireless G PCMCIA card with it
What do you think would be a fair trade for a netbook, spec wise? I kind of think my laptop is worth more then a used Acer Aspire one 8.9" with 8gb HD (with XP). I'd like to straight up trade for one with a 10" screen 1gb RAM 120/160gb HD with XP.. but not sure if it's worth quite that much?
Any advice on my situation would be appreciated... should I consider selling it (how much?) and buying a new unit? Or would trading probably be my best option?

I just hauled a couple of Compaq's with similar specs to the dump. The real problem is the RAM. 512 does so little. Not sure I would get my hopes up of getting enough to purchase a netbook

I posted an ad locally on kijiji (laptop trade for netbook) and had a reply with someone offering an Acer Aspire One with 1gb ram, 8gb HD and XP. Would this be a good trade then? I would have liked to get something with a "real" hard drive (like 160gb) but again I likely woun't be storing lots of images or anything. I think I'll wait a week and if I get no better offers maybe I should go for it?
I hope by "dump" you are donating those old laptops to someplace where people can reuse them. Still good for browsing the net and basic functions it's a shame if they end up being e-waste. :(

DStanic,
Depending on the condition and included accessories of the Aspire One. I would definitely say go for it. Based on your specs, I wouldn't expect for someone to pay more than $130-170 for the laptop. The fact that there is no WiFi built in (i know you are offering a wireless card), battery only lasting 30 min and lack (or limited) of expandable memory (RAM) really diminishes the value...
Your laptop is great for someone looking for a basic word processing notebook w/ internet (younger children).
On a side note, the 8GB (most likely) SSD, in the Aspire is easily upgradeable however can be costly because of current SSD prices.
Hope this helps.

I'd not pay more then €100, if that...

I don't think I'd pay 100 anything (except maybe yen) ;)

Don't worry about a "real" hdd, if you want to do that, and have an old ipod, you have a new HDD for the netbook. Though 32gb sd card (which it accepts) are cheap now, and worst comes to worst a pocket drive like WD passport. netbooks really do need SSD to operate properly though, hdds that small are just too slow for the weak processor, so startup is many times faster with ssd (one of these 8gb netbooks fully loaded up XP in under 20s, not just load to login screen either)

I don't think I'd use the words 'Aspire One', 'Uprgade' and 'Easy' in the same sentence - unless the word 'Not' was also present. Upgrading the hard drive or ram in these things means a near-complete disassembly. I'm no slouch with a screwdriver, but I decided it sounded too risky for me.
Dstanic - As others have said - your laptop isn't really worth anything. It's definitely not worth the same as a netbook with more ram, bigger disk and longer battery life. In fact, I think the swap offer you've got is a great deal and I'd have snapped it up. Even if the 8GB SSD will be very restricting - you can always use a couple of 16GB SD cards for storage if needed.
