72mm to 77mm

Just out of curiosity, does anyone use 72mm to 77mm step up rings with their 24L? I plan on getting:

for use with my 35L and eventually a 24L and 85L because all of my expensive filters are 77mm. I don't feel like dropping hundreds of dollars to get redundant filters for the smaller filter sizes, so I was wondering if use of neutral density or non-slim circular polarizers will cause vignetting on the 24L. I figured the 77mm should offer some more latitude in it's extra diameter to reduce the chance, but if there are any first hand users, I'd really appreciate some input. Thanks in advance!

I tried this on another lens and found the lens hood couldn't be removed without removing the filter. I ditched the step-up and got another set of filters :(

I always use a lens hood and would not do anything that would prevent that from being possible.

I use step-up rings all the time, primarily when shooting off a tripod. I simply shield the lens from the sun with something, such as a hat. No problem.

yea, i thought about that.. i'm still trying to figure out how much of an issue it will be as i won't have the filters on my primes all that often. it's more or less an option i want when i'm packing light and will probably be carrying the 24L, 35L, and 85L while leaving my zooms at home.

yea, i religiously use lens hoods too, but if you think about it, you can't use hoods with a CPL anyways. unless there's a massive threat of flare, adjusting a CPL and then mounting the hood before taking a shot is just too much trouble for me most of the time. using a circular polarizer is the only time i really shoot without a hood because it's too much hassle to make adjustments. if you have a technique that allows you the ability to manipulate a CPL with the 24-70, 70-200, etc hood attached, i'd love to learn.

With the 24-70, it's super-simple. Just zoom to the short focal length temporarily and you can easily reach the filter for adjustment.

With the 70-200 f/2.8L IS, I can reach into the hood to tweak the filter if I need to. However, it's easier to temporarily remove the hood (with the filter still attached), adjust the filter, then put the hood back on.

hmm, i'll have to give it a shot sometime. it only seemed practical to do that sort of thing if i was tripod mounted. hand-holding the 70-200 while stuffing my hand into the hood and holding my camera/lens steady with the other hand takes a bit of manual acrobatics which i always figured to be way more trouble than it was worth.

I use a hood purely as a lens protector, nothing else. At 24mm, that skimpy hood isn't going to shield much against flare. The angle of view is so wide, I don't really see the need for a hood other that to protect the lens from scuffs. It's like the hood for a 16-35/17-40L, completely pointless in my opinion.
If you need to use a filter then ditch the hood, or put it on a tripod and use a remote release and use your hand over the lens to reduce flare/glare/ghosting etc.
Besides, since Lost and the last Star Trek film, lens flare is back in Vogue.
