View Full Version : They said it couldn't be done! (Or: Why you should use a monopod)

This was taken with a Canon D30, Canon 300mm L with a (non-Canon) 2x teleconverter - that's a 35mm equivalent of 960mm. That combination isn't supposed to work on a D30 (and doesn't usually) but I guess it was just so bright that there was enough light to autofocus.
The shutter speed? Just 1/100sec!! No image stabiliser, just a monopod and a careful stance!

Kevin, it's like you said... It's all about the talent, not the equipment!

Thats a nice shot - It is all about the talent not the equipment. Although a DSLR does help compared to a P&S.

WOW nice and sharp, which 300mm L did you use? I am thinking of getting one but was hoping for the f/2.8 but I think all I can afford is the f/4 :-/

That's a great shot at 1/100 sec! (Now lets see the one before & after it!) ;-)

Well I'll be damned... it actually worked  Good shot, Kevin!

Monopod is almost a must for nearly any sport. :) And is just like the cherry on top.
Good job on the photo.

I had a couple of useable shots at this speed but this was the best one! I started at 1/400 and worked my way down to 1/100 and was amazed that I could get results that slow. The best speed seemed to be 1/200.
Ferdinand, I was using the 300mm f4 L IS USM (I think that's its correct title!!) which I can't afford either! So, thanks to Andy for the use of his lens. ;) We'd all like an f2.8 but this is still a very nice lens, IMHO.

Tops!
AND
Based on the reflections in the front wheel I calculated the car was doing 85 km/hr or 53 mph. See what you can do with a good clear shot and bit of physics.
Cheers

Looking at the photo and these thread notes i can accertain that this particular photo is going to bore me to death over the next few weeks at work ;)
on a technical front, fabulouse photo not one of you "soft focus" efforts you so often take ;)
Looking forward to seeing your GP shots later this year,

I assume that's a joke, if not how the hell did yo work that out? I did physics, but was never very good

No joke. Look carefully at the front wheel (especially at the bright smears halfway between the rim and the hub) and you can see a regular pattern. I copied the image into PS and drew in the angles between the centre of the wheel and the start and end of one smear. Then I copied/pasted the same angle (I needed eight in total) until I had made the full 360o. this means the wheel has turned 45o in 100th of a second. Assuming the wheel is 24" in diameter, after that its just high school maths. In fact I might set the same problem for my class today.
What this shows is the added value of a sharp shot with a touch of motion in it.

Great shot and I will also agree that the front wheel is fantastic.
