I've never used a flash like this before...I tried to bounce the flash off of the ceiling...

then off of the side of the wall...

I'm having fun experimenting with it, but I find the flash more confusing then I initially thought it would be. Any tips?

Put the flash in high-speed sync, otherwise you're limited to 1/200 on the shutter. Took me a few days to figure that one out. Of coarse, I didn't read the manual either. So, that was my fault.

It looks like this...

Personally, I have a 430EXII, but they're about the same, just the slave/master mode and the power. ETTL does wonders if you're new to your flash. When taking photos, you want to make it seem like you're not using flash, so try to bounce your flash off something as much as possible and try to avoid point it directly at the subject. If the ceiling of the room you're working in isn't too high, bounce the light off the ceiling.

Agree. :) You have an adorable doggy. Sorry I don't have any input on the flash itself. I just love the different 'pressions on the doggy's face as you were experimenting.

I love the last one myself. Im also a newbie to my 430EXII, still haven't read the manual, but I've found bouncing does wonders, even in a dark room. Thanks for posting that pic of the high speed sync, I will give that a hot for my stuff.

no try to bounce the light off a wall. Don't ever point it directly at your subject and especially yout sweet little dog. He does not appreciate the being nuked :)

LOVE the expression on the doggy's face in the third shot. I straight up think of the Tool-Time show at the end of the opening credits "Hruhhhgggnnn?"

I got the 580 EX II too, I find it is a very complicated flash to use, as I dont have menu driven control of the 1D, since I am only using a 5D. I found that my AF beam assist was default to off. Also that AI servo doesnt work well in the dark and doesnt shoot a AF Beam, back to single shot.

Camera to manual, flash on ettl. Pick a shutter speed between 1/250 and slowest available handhold speed, pic aperture based on desireable depth of field, the flash then adds enough to make it work. Bounce when you can, diffuse when you must, direct only when you have to.

Having the same trouble, bouncing does seem to help. anyone have any informative tutorials about the the 580 or just flash in general?

I'm another one with 580EXII woes.

Me thinks somebody should write a book; "Everything You've Always Wanted To Know About The 580EXII But Were Afraid To Ask!"

I have studied the manual but it doesn't really help much when you're a flash newb.

Can anyone offer some idiot proof instructions, or have they already been posted by Gonzogolf?

I think Blue Crane has a DVD that teaches the 580/430 and how to use. No sure if it's what you're looking for.

Don't work for 'em. Just happen to remember that title. If anyone has it, please review it.

Thanks! Looks as though it could be what I'm after.
