Easy.......

Neutral Grey and invest in coloured filter gels for the background light (or lights). That way, the gels can give you any colour you like :)

This works if it's a plain background you want.

plain backgrounds -- white- grey - black or sometimes a velvet red....

are you building your own? what design/plans are you using?

I'd go with white. White can be made into anything, even easier than grey. Well maybe white can't be made into black, but I don't like black, people and hair blend into it.

Well it's not a "real" photobooth.. just like a studio/booth.. I'llhave 2 lights/umbrellas or softboxes and a background. Laptop connected to Cam so ppl can see the pics as they take them.

We use a white hilite background so there's no shadows and the lights are right at the back so there's less chance of people stumbling over them, we use a couple of flashes with umbrellas for the front lights.

When we haven't been booked to do a photo booth and have done an ad-hoc one we have used whatever plain wall was available, definitely prefer using the hilite background though, post processing afterward is much easier.

Lots of examples of our photo booth pics from a few weddings here > Wedding Photo Booth (http://boundlessphotos.com/blog/category/photo-booth/)

Heres a few examples from the photo booths we have done at 3 weddings so far.

1. These were shot on a white paper background but were a pain to process due to creases in it. (We were shooting outside with a bit of wind)

2. White Paper background photo booth

3. White paper background.

4. Plain wall Photo Booth because we didnt have a background with us.

5. Plain wall

6. Hlite background Photo Booth, this was our first paid outing at a wedding with the photo booth.

7. Hilite background was maybe a little hot but I like the look of them with the background spill light and they were dead quick and easy to post process with zero shadows.

8. And no matter how big your photo booth background is (ours is 7 feet by 8 feet) people will find something to do bigger than it

Says the guys with a black background for his own photo. :p

Though I completely agree, a white background allows for nearly unlimited editing and helps to keep absolutely as much detail as possible in the hair.

When you don't use the Hilight what do you use for lighting for the subject and the background?

I have used white paper, a plain wall and a hilite background for photo booths and each time I have just used 4 speedlites, 2 bare ones for the background and two with umbrellas for lighting the subjects. Advantage of the hilite background is that its easier to light with different quantities of subjects in the frame and you can stand them very close to it to make max use of its size.
