View Full Version : WHAT I WISH YOU ALL WOULD DO

That's right. I'm yelling. At "all" of you. Well, a heck of a lot of you, anyway. This is a PHOTO forum. At least part of it's purpose, other than to provide entertainment, is to allegedly help others with the art of photography.
I wish YOU ALL when you post a picture, would say a few words that you think are the central relevance as to what went into making the shot. If you were hanging upside down from a chandelier, fine. It might help in some cases to take the ORIGINAL unaltered frame, reduce the filesize to a small nearly a thumnail, to give us an idea of what you started from. SOMETIMES it might even help to mention how many frames you discarded!! in order to get the shot.
Equipment, settings, photshopping, all are a help. I see shots every day posted on here that seem to be nothing more than bragging rights.

When I post a photo, I try to include exif info with it. If you have any other questions, just ask. Just one question for you. Do you practice what you preach??

So? Fine line between bragging and sharing, sometimes the same thing. Hence this section.. http://photography-on-the.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=6
For some people the end result is all that matters, for others its the journey getting there. Not hard to ask for the unknown.

I was going to suggest the same thing as Jaymz did. If you spend your time in this "General Photography Talk" area or the camera/lens sections you are looking in the wrong areas (of course if you see a cool shot, I'm sure if you ask nicely you'll get info!)

If you want to know more details about an image, just ask. Most of us are quite willing to discuss the process, the concept and the execution of an image.

For me, the link you posted is part of the problem. If I browsed many of those categories AND POSTED QUESTIONS, it would soon get lost in the extreme throughput of the forum. AT THE VERY LEAST posting EXIF and a short note would help immensely.

There's been quite a few times I've done just that, and for whatever reason, either the OP didn't feel like it, or check back, never answered.

Well, you can't force anyone to share information they don't want to share. So, you can either get upset about it, or just shrug it off. I've found a polite request, usually gets the job done.

That's right. I'm yelling. At "all" of you.
I don't particularly appreciate that.
This is a PHOTO forum.
Correct. It's not a "you MUST show your EXIF and explain every post you make" forum. Maybe you could start one?
I see shots every day posted on here that seem to be nothing more than bragging rights.
People post their best work. Get over it.
Given the general tone of this thread you've started, I must say I'm not surprised you have trouble getting people to respond when you ask for information about a photo...

Agreed. A lot of people play their cards close to their chest and i 100% back that. Personally if it wasnt for exif i wouldn't have a clue what i used to get any result, i have the memory of a goldfish and dont care either. Asking politely for the exif in a private message or the thread can go a long way to getting help.

I recently discovered EXIF data, and it helps me alot, to see what settings people shoot at!

You haven't even started a thread sharing any of your images, let alone how you shot them.
If you really want help, post a photo and ask for it.

There are better ways to improve your own photography than simply copying what someone else has done without even asking why they did it.

Hmmm. You haven't made a persuasive case why I should give a rat's ass what you want.
A bit of attitude adjustment would help...

May I suggest, roadrunner, that you ...
1. Start a new thread with a new title
2. Drop the first and last paragraphs
3. Remove the capitals from the middle paragraph.
That would be fine.

I'm not going to post EXIF for my pics. PERIOD.
However, if someone asks I'll be glad to volunteer all the information; and your attitude in this thread isn't helping your cause.

Well the first sentence makes you seem like a complete a-hole, might want to change that if you want to get your "point" across to anyone. I prefer to not be looked at as if I were ignorant. I'm well aware that this is a photo(graphy) forum, that's why I joined ;). What do you mean allegedly, haha? This forum has helped me out beyond belief and I learn something new here EVERY single day so there is nothing alleged about it. I LOVE talking about photography. However, I don't need/want to post a short essay whenever I post a picture, frankly I don't have to. If someone wants to know something about my picture, I will gladly and politely answer it to the best of my knowledge. People post there best pictures, so what? Nothing wrong with that.

I've noticed the ones that scream the loudest on these forums never seem to have gallery links in their signatures and never post examples of their own work...

Before we all get up the lynch mob... I think he does have a point, although he could have phrased it better. I often see posts where someone asks for specific advice on a shot and they give no detail at all on how/why they took it. I have Panda EXIF viewer for Firefox viewer and often there is no EXIF in a posted shot.
If you do 'save for web' in PS you can opt to include EXIF. I don't often do that but then if I do ask for comment I give the basic EXIF in the post.
Personally, I want to be a member of photographic fora because I want to discuss photographs and photography matters in general. But it's sometimes hard to do that when so little info is provided by others.

Often times you can simply ask how something is done and the OP will explain it, sometimes in PM. I often do in PM because I like the personal approach.
Often times I actually add up an msn or yahoo account to my messenger or skype and then talk with the artist directly. It takes a bit of ice breaking but I like to go the whole 10 yards if Im going out and about at all :)
404roadrunner, though, we see none of your pics...where are they ? Lead by example and eventually some will follow

Just look in the lenses forum, at any "is this a sharp copy?" thread. 99% of the pics posted there sure aren't for bragging rights, and most of them go into exhaustive detail about the settings and techniques used. :D

I haven't posted a shot in quite awhile but I do maintain exif in my images on my pbase site where I link from so that anyone can view it. I cannot understand why there is a reluctance to share this. It's not like it is a trade secret. Are you afraid that someone might learn something from you. If can influence anyone I would be happy. When I did post my shots I almost always added the exif to the text of the post.
I agree that the original post has some merit and could certainly have been worded more appropriately. It is what it is now and nothing that can be done but perhaps future posts related to this will learn from this thread.

Of the few times I've PM'd about an image, I've gotten really great replies. Very nice folks in here.
It's a matter of asking the right kind of questions in the right kind of way to the right kind of people.
You can't expect to be spoon fed information though...

I'm not clear on what you mean, exactly --
Are you interested in the thinking behind the framing/crop and post-processing?
Are you interested in what the technical setup was and why?
Are you interested in whether or not there was any thinking at all?
Are you interested in a journalistic caption of the subject?
BTW, when I read this, I thought it might be the point of your post:
<<I see shots every day posted on here that seem to be nothing more than bragging rights.>>
I think most people who post prefer to hear some nice comment about their work.
I think many who post do so because the act of locating a photo to post is itself a reminder of good times in their lives, too.
And when it comes to the post-processing for others to learn/teach, that's just an act of kindness.

Of course most image posts are for "bragging rights". You show off your best work. Why would I post by worst photos and ask for critique? That makes no sense.
I almost never post EXIF data. I never think to. I would be more than happy to jump back to the original and post the EXIF if someone wanted me too though. Try asking. And if you don't get your answer, so what? Move along.
This forum is easily the best, most readily available stockpile of photographic knowledge and know-how on the net. Treat it well and it will treat you well in return.

Thank you all so much for your responses. Now I see what I'm up against. I've already asked, previously, with very little feedback, for info on what you all have done. I finally gave up. THIS thread is therefore born out of frustration.
Now I see the true nature you all have. It isn't very nice, either.
Comments such as "I'm not going to post EXIF for my pics. PERIOD" say it all. Is this a photo forum, or is it just someplace to brag about how much money you have?

No one is required to reveal their secrets/skills/processes. If you're ignored, either consider your approach or shrug it off and move on.

When you sound like a complete ass, your going to get rude remarks back at you. That's the bottom line of it. I have NEVER met anyone on this site that has been anything but kind and courteous to me. I'm sorry if you've had different experiences. However, it's not any of our problems, is it? Unless of course one of us are the people that are "ignoring" you.

If it bugs you that people write about what they bought then don't visit the equipment section. I don't see why it would bug you if people like to talk about the gear that they have, I actually quite enjoy reading the equipment sections along with all other sections of this forum.
What does posting EXIF have to do with how much money you have? You need to remember that no one has to give you their information. PERIOD =).
