I went to a show at the new San Diego House Of Blules last night. They don't allow cameras, but I did see one young lady walkinig around with a pretty substantial rig. She also had an adhesive photo pass on her leg. When I talked to her, she said she was working from some small local news outfit.

I know many venues have "house" photographers, but that didn't seem to be the case last night.

I got the Manager's name and contact information, but I was wondering about "the approach". Is there a "good" or "bad" way to approach someone at a place like this about being a house photographer?

Thanks...

Steve

Show up in person & show some of your work? Just what does a "house photographer" get out of it in your case?

The best thing you can do is approach the marketing director for the HOB. Work for free a couple of shows and see if they like the results. Since they are a national chain, that might be easier said than done. Start with the local manager and work you way up. As for being a " house" photographer, that is a good gig, since the HOB should do all the leg work in getting your credentials to the bands/ artists. It would be nice to show that you have a portfolio and have worked in concert / events before.

There are also times when you will have to go through a bands/ artists PR firm to get media passes. This can be a pain in the butt, but well worth it. This means contacting there record label, their manager, and maybe the PR firm. You will have to present to them where your shots will be published, with an article written or review of the show, and then another can of worms is who has rights to the photographs and how will they get copies.

I am currently going through this process for a show on June 3rd. So far have spoken with the Venue's manager, Record label manager, and now I am to the PR firms pubilicty director.

I have a local magazine and a nightlife website backing me.

Good Luck
