So im trying to get the hang of shooting stars (without trails) for the moment. I read some stuff and tried shooting at ISO 800, aperture 3.5-5.0 and about 30 sec shutter speeds. The shots were totally blurry. I did have the focus on infinity.
Tell me if my thoughts are correct on this one. Was it the lens that made my shots blurry? Its a kit lens 18-55 IS. I read somewhere that a wide angle would be best for this type of shooting. Was the lens the problem, or was it me :(

probley was focus,do you have live view? zoom in on the brightest star or a steet light... if there are any, then try focusing see if thats any better.ady

So do Wide angles lens stay in focus at high apertures (4.0)?

Yes, the lens should stay in focus.
I do what the previous post said. I set the lens to manual focus and use a bright star in live view to get the focus right. Then you have to be very careful not to touch the focus ring as you move the camera.
If you use a zoom lens then you probably can't zoom in, set the focus, and zoom out again. Most lenses won't keep the focus if when you adjust the zoom.
