View Full Version : Buyer Beware

I thought it might be useful to start a "buyer beware" thread. Anybody have any negative experiences buying their cameras or equipment?

Here's my story:

Broadway Photo is among the companies using Canon Powershot G1 gray market cameras as bait, then switching to the USA version and pushing over-priced accessories. I bought my camera from them and then subsequently found out that the filter kit, case, and tripod were priced at roughly twice the going rate, and the extra battery they sold me worked for only about 20 minutes. The salesman misrepresented the life of the Canon battery as 30 minutes to convince me to buy an extra battery, and also pushed their kit on me (filters, case, tripod). I had the sense to decline the $150 or so in-store add-on warranty.

I got them to exchange the battery for a decent battery and, when I complained about the other items, eventually got them to credit my card for $100. However, what a hassle. I would never do business with them again.

Subsequently, I learned about http://www.resellerratings.com and I see that my experience was exactly like that of many others. The "30-minute battery" line, the "International version" bait and switch, and the double-priced accessories are apparently their standard practice, as numerous items were sold to numerous customers using these same tactics.

Any place selling a Canon EOS D30 for ~$1600 can be assumed to be not on the up and up. I almost fell for it, but I found the ratings sites before (big sigh of relief). There is also www.photo.net. They have an alphabetized thread (by store name) with experiences and recommendations.
