I would say it all depends on whether or not you would stand to benefit from what the firmware update is actually adding or improving. For example, Canon just released a firmware update for the 20D which adds support for their Wi-Fi interface. Since I can’t imagine ever owning that Wi-Fi adapter myself, I see no need to update my 20D’s firmware if that is the only new feature or improvement.
On the other hand, according to Canon’s web site, the v1.2.1 firmware update for the 1DMkII offers the following:
1. Three new languages (Russian, Traditional Chinese, and Korean) added to the camera menus.
2. Improvement in communication reliability when using some CF cards.
3. The issue of communication failure between the camera and some personal computers has been fixed.
If any of those three items look beneficial to you, then install the update. It’s up to you. Personally, if it were me, I would install it based on numbers 2 and 3. Canon's firmware update procedure is very simple. Just read AND follow the directions and you'll be fine.
Naturally, if the camera you receive already has the v1.2.1 installed, then you'll already have the latest firmware.

thanks for that ,
i will have to check what it has on it ,none of the above are needed apart from maybe the cf card so i wont rush into doing it ,
if it aint broke dont fix it seems good to me .
