Date Rememberance

Is there a way to have a file remember the date and time a digital photo was taken?
When I download the photos using the photo card reader on my photo printer. the photo picture properties will adjust to time created and last time modifed to the last time the photo was edited or copied to the computer. Is there utility or something which will append the the date and time to the photo when it was taken?

exif data should have the date the picture was taken. are you talking about the properties in windows? or if you right click>properties>summary? if you want to see the date that the picture was taken, just open the folder with the photos, set it to detail view (icon at the top or the view option), right click on the bar that says date modified (or any of the other ones), click on more..., and check the option 'date picture taken'
