Hi,
I got a new TC 1.4x last week. I use it on a 300mm f/4L IS with a Rebel 300D. Main purpose: birds shooting. My goal with the TC was not to get bigger pictures but more details one. With good light condition, this goal is achieved but with average to poor light condition, the lost a 1 f-stop make the AF less reliable. So what you gain in zoom, you "may" lose it in sharpness.
Those examples show what the TC can do in average light condition. Take note that this specific picture is an easy task for the AF.
All pictures are cropped to get pixel details. No other mods in PS except resizing.
First example; I resized down the TC picture to match the size on the non-TC picture

With TC (resize to match picture above)

Second example: I resize up the non-TC picture to match the size of the TC picture.

There is one other advantage with the TC. Your subject is bigger, you get less background so the camera do a better job adjusting levels and colors balancing according to the subject. Yes, you can always adjust back the colors but a bad exposition will be difficult to correct.
