View Full Version : First time long exposure Night shots-- Hawaii C&C please

These were taken just outside my hotel. Let me know what you guys think. Keep in mind that this is my first time doing night shots with long exposures... please give me some advice to make my photos better next time.

You might want to re-size these to 1024 on the longest size before a Mod comes along and smites thee...

The last one is the only one in my mind that is worth keeping and that would be from a documentary standpoint. What you see and what the camera sees are often two very different realities. Composition is everything, well that and lighting. There are books on the psychological interpretations of imagery on the mind. They are a worthwhile study.

Try shooting before the sky has gone to black. After the sun sets you'll get a short period of time where the sky will go deep deep blue, and all the city lights have come on. This is the period of time where your night shots have enough ambient light left to make for some dynamic images.

#1 could have ben rendered a bit lighter.
#2 is your best shot of all.
#3 and 4 would probably give a better balance between the twilight and the artificial light if they had been shot earlier in the evening. In other words, the artificial light should have been darker in relation to the twilight.
