I am about 100 pages into the book and after spending a whole chapter in excruciating details on basic things like cropping and adding text it skimmed over the unsharp mask so fast that it never said anything about what the settings do!

So do I try to get a better book on Gimp or just pay my 80$ for Elements and choose among the great selection of books for this one.

I'm not interested in anything else than photo processing and it's mostly to fix sharpness, colors and small fixes. I don't want to change my pics, just process them. Basicaly I need a book on Gimp for photographers or Elements for photographers.

That is a very bad Gimp Book, I bought it and I have no idea what to do with it, it has no substance.
I recommend you to watch the videos at http://meetthegimp.org/, if you really want to learn about Gimp that is a great place to spend time.

95% of anything you read in a book or on-line tutorial for Elements will apply equally to Gimp.

I downloaded and tried GIMP. I got the same book from the library and had it a whole month. Gave up and got photoshop. Seems like the only people who can use it are the one who wrote it. Spend the $80 and get Elements. You'll be better off in the long run.
