i would like to know your recommendations on a 77mm filter for my L lens.
here is what i am generally looking for in a filter:
sharpness (or retains sharpness as if L lens had no filter on)
general (indoor and outdoor) capabilities
lens protection
reasonable price and trusted brand
thanks POTN for the help!

I use B+W MRC UV filters.
I've been buying mine from B&H or Hvstar (MaxSaver.com I believe).

You've spent a lot of money on L glass, so spend a few more quid / dollars on a decent filter to protect your front element amongst other things.
You only get what you pay for don't forget!

Comes down to personal choice I guess, but money well spent rather than buying hong kong fooey type stuff.
"Hoya" here in the UK is own choice.
Personally put a Uv on my own stuff, although I do remove them from time to time if conditions apply at the time of shooting.
Each to their own for choice & value.

reasonable price and trusted brandthanks POTN for the help! The best choice, at least until you decide what you want a filter to do for you - creatively, that is - is to USE the lens hood provided with the lens and forget any "clear" filters. That, and a little reasonable care, is all you need for "protection" of the lens.
Understanding and using proper lens cleaning techniques is also important, but cleaning a lens beyond a few puffs with a squeeze-bulb blower is seldom needed.
I have a mess of high-end lenses that I bought in the mid 1960's that have never had a filter on them for "protection", and the glass in all of them is in nearly pristine condition. All have been very heavily used over the years.

Good choice. This one has been mentioned a few times already so you can't go wrong with this one. :)

+1 Vote for the B+W UV/Haze (MRC) F-Pro filter. Have one on all of my lenses.
