People posing or candids? Which do you prefer?

Which is your preference when shooting friends/family?

I personally try to grab as many candids as I can and only take pictures of people posing when they notice I'm taking a picture and pose.

The magic is getting a blend of both - photojournalism along with mixed posed shots.

I'm horrible at candids. Unless it's my nephews. They're awesome at ignoring me and my camera...even if it's right in their faces..because they've been around it since their births. :D

Combination of both, just as National Geographic does. I personally dislike "sniper" candids, except in situations dangerous to life and limb. The best work has been done when the subject is aware of the photographer, but the photographer has made himself or herself so integral in the environment that the subject stops taking notice.
